I am now about 8 weeks pregnant with my third baby and suffering with the most chronic sickness all day. I live in Spain and have been to the local Pharmacy, who have given me some tablets that just don't work. I am due to visit an English speaking Clinic next week, but are currently just hanging on there until then.

Does anyone have any tips as to what might help.

Any help is really appreciated.

Hi Moomoinsmummy. I think your experience with the doctor is common. I was told it was 'normal' by three different doctors until my MW said, er no actually.... you need some help. I too went back armed with help from hyperemesis.org. Lots of good support there too.

Best of luck to everyone suffering with this. Hope yours does go at the earliest possible time. Most people's does. I'm 24 weeks and still waiting...

KMaurice · 21/09/2007 12:28

Does anyone else feel guilty because the last thing they want to eat is veggies when they're feeling ill and you should be eating good stuff now for the baby!?!

I hardly have an appetite at all let alone for veggies!

bubblagirl · 21/09/2007 12:34

i had bad sickness all day up untill 6 mths then a month of nothing then sickness up untill my ds was born everyone said ginger biscuits or ginger in tea so i guess ginger lol and slice of lemon in water now that was nice with ice cubes makes you feel slightly refreshed

and made sure i ate asmall regular meals as became quite bad at not eating and then felt alot worse good luck

moominsmummy · 21/09/2007 12:35

Know what you mean about the veggies - broccoli is the worst - couldn't stand it for all of my first pregnancy nor for months after.
Bizarrely it's the one green veg my son will eat now!!
I find fruit much easier to eat than veg - grapes, strawberries, bananas - with lots of sugar on - TBH anything you can eat is good news - don't worry about the baby - the cheeky little things take every ounce of nutrients they need from you and you just get what's left over!!!

Rumpel · 21/09/2007 13:07

ACUPUNCTURE - it works. Was really sick then when got to 5 months my colleague gave me acupuncture 3 weeks in a row. Still felt a bit nauseus from time to time but I could function again. We are going to TTC next month so I am booked for acupuncture for 1st October - I am hoping if I have it regularly it will help me feel more human next time

I also had a pint of cold diet coke every morning from about 10 weeks to 6 months - I NEVER drink coke - was the only thing I could face first thing though.

MY DD is mostly made of avocado, diet coke, oatcakes, cheese and pickled onions and cake!

Rumpel · 21/09/2007 13:08

Another thing I took to suck on at work (when I eventually managed to get out of bed to got to work) was sweets called 'sourz' the sour taste seemed to help with the sick feeling.

Lorayn · 21/09/2007 13:34

I understand sucking on sweet, i have a bag of barley sugar in my bedside table

moominsmummy · 21/09/2007 13:56

Rumpel - lol at what your DD is made of! My DS is mainly made of lasagne and orange fanta (although can't stand the stuff usually!)
Bit panicky as GP wants me to come off the tablets - there's no way I can go back to work unless I am on the tablets - I don't think my boss will be impressed with 3 months of sick leave shortly followed by maternity leave!

susiemj · 21/09/2007 14:19

My doctor took me off Stemetil too. I'm now on Avomine, which is a travel sickness medecine. There's also one similar called Cyclazine. They help, although they don't do as much as Stemetil. My doctor is very cautious. Sounds like yours is too. Everyone says they're fine to take all the way through. They don't make me well enough to go back to work though....

If you're ill you're ill. That's what I tell myself. I do feel badly about it, but not as badly as I feel sick.

I tried accupuncture and homeopathy but they didn't work for me. Try them. They have worked for others. My GP did it. Maybe you've got one who can do it at your surgery or can recommend one.

Ditto on the vegies. Haven't eaten any since about week 6. Or meat. Or anything cooked. My daughter will be made of brown bread, fruit and milk (esp in the form of ice cream!). Coke too, but I had the sugary one.

Swaliswan · 21/09/2007 17:28

I had stemetil prescribed for hyperemesis and it was the only thing that took the edge off my sickness. I wasn't just a little sick either - I couldn't even keep down sips of water at one point. I found that having iced water with a slice of lemon was more tolerable than plain water.

I tried everything that people suggested to me and nothing worked (and you know that EVERYONE has a 'magic cure' for morning sickness). Eventually the sickness subsided and the drugs definitely helped lots although they knocked me out and I was still sick at least 3 times a day it was better than not taking them. I did find that pickled onions helped for some strange reason and have heard that other women have found this too but you need to just go with what works for you.

Anyway, DD is now 4 months old and we're considering TTC in the near future. Thankfully DH will be in the country this time so he can hold the bucket for me!

Lorayn · 21/09/2007 17:59

Just got back from the doctors and he has given me some buccastem (prochlorperazine) tablets. I have to take these for the enxt 24 hours and if I havent stopped vomiting, then go to the emergency doctors over the weekend to keep an eye on my hydration levels and try something else!

mumofk · 22/09/2007 01:46

Is anyone else getting heartburn with it? I'm 'just' naseuous, not actively puking but I'm writing this at 1.30 am after it waking me up! Feeling too sick and heartburny to sleep, but this week I've figured out tired=feeling even worse. Arrgh, whats tomorrow going to be like? So glad its weeknd and husband will have to look after DD and me. Bugger for weekend plans though, daft us for trying to make some.
I'm trying seabands 24 hrs, and actually eating what appeals- 4 pkts of hoola hoops isn't even a food group in our house, but it turned into a meal!
Giving the gaviscon chance to work. Sorry everyone else is feeling rubbish, but its reassuring I'm not the only one.

macaco · 22/09/2007 12:13

Hi twinklewishes. I'm in Spain too and nearly 10 weeks. Been suffering sickness too. You can buy gingernuts here in mercadona but I really don't recommend them...too sweet and made me heave. Get some fresh ginger and put a 1cm square in hot water with a slice of lemon, helped me a lot. I was given cariban by the doctor for the queasiness but it did nothing at all. I find best thing is a small quantity of carbs very often.

moominsmummy · 22/09/2007 14:20

lorayn - glad to hear they are doing something for you - i am on the same stuff (although more common alternative name is stemetil)
had scan this morning - just one healthy heartbeat seen (thank god no twins!!) can't believe it has hearbeat when it's only 2cm long- wow
saw dr at hospital too who said I would be ok taking stemetil (buccastem) long term - no known effects on baby - which is a great relief

JessDay · 22/09/2007 15:00

I wish I'd seen the Blooming Awful website when I was pg (great name!). I was just told it was normal, and the doctor didn't seem worried when I went to him concerned that I'd lost half a stone in a month (I was 9stone to start with, so I didn't have all that much to spare.)

I found it really hard even to drink fluids - it was like my mouth didn't want to let them in - and I couldn't face the sight of food. People in work kept telling me how 'great' I looked, i.e. 'thin'. Says a lot about people's weird attitudes to weight, as I clearly looked dreadful.

Anyway, I found nothing really worked, I just puked until about 18 weeks, when it gradually faded. Sucking mints was OK but only while I sucked them. I stopped polos because I was worried about my teeth and switched to breath fresheners, and then someone told me that aspartame and xylitol are a risk in pregnancy! Try and see any food as a victory rather than feeling guilty about your diet. The only things I could keep down for weeks were baked potato and plain noodles, so Rach must be constructed solely out of stodge.

At the time it seemed like forever, but the memory fades pretty quickly afterwards. I'm now considering number 2, and I swore I was never doing it again at the time! Hang in there.

Elsy · 22/09/2007 15:32

I had this with my first pregnancy. It lasted from about 6 weeks to 4 months. Yuk! Only thing that helped me was to sleep and to munch constantly on Polos. Now that I've got a 9 month old DD, sleep won't really be an option so I'm holding off on getting pregnant again for a while!

Peachy · 22/09/2007 15:37

I'm gettimg heartburn too- but on the good (ie minimal vomiting) days- today si a abd day sadly but I am on the up, coming up 13 weeks though so maybe linked.

Can't wait til it passes- ahd to drag ds1 and ds3 into the disabled loo (both ASd so OK!) at the pool today (DS2's lesson, dh was asleepa s ahs night shift tonight) with me as I vomited- nto nice, for them or me!

Kanga44 · 22/09/2007 16:18

I currently am 6weeks with #2 and am as sick as a dog...but considering whats just happened this last week...I say 'bring it on'!!!! I use travel sickness bands...they really do help.

As for the comment about feeling guilty about not eating veg.....I admittedly only eat sprouts (not sure if theyre out at the mo) and marrowfat peas and potatoes and that is all!!! My daughter (2yrs old) Is as healthy as anything so not eating veg didnt affect her in anyway....dont worry....your veggie appetite will soon appear lol.

hope everyones sickness subsides soon x

bigdonna · 22/09/2007 17:47

i found eating rice, pasta and chips helped these were the only things i could keep down and flat coke to settle my tummy.i was still sick maybe 4 times a day until i gave birth just had a permanent hangover but soon as i had my dd i was fine.she was also very healthy and i had only put on 5lb in weight.hope u feel better soon

twosquared · 23/09/2007 05:36

Hiya

I got horrible morning sickness with my first set of twins, throwing up at least 10 times each day for 20 weeks.

a nutritionist (!) recommended that i drink flat coke and sip on it through out the day. like bigdonna i actually think that helped.

i also used sea bands which helped a little

but thought you might like to know that both my obs. and nutritionist told me that living on potatoes (all i could keep down for 3 months) would not do my baby or me any harm in such early stages of pregnancy. and my twins are now healthy as can be.

even better losing SOOO much weight at the start of pregnancy allowed me to eat LOTS of magnums for the rest of my pregnancy with no guilt what so ever!

good luck and try to stay positive!

sibble · 23/09/2007 05:59

Sickness, that's why I'm sticking to 2, I couldn't face it a third time. I don't think it matter if you are nauseous of vomiting both are horrible. I seriously considered terminating both at very low points . I think, as somebody said, just eat what you can, small and often. For me it was soft white rolls with poppy seeds on top with kraft dairylea inside . It's mostly all I ate for about 6 months both times. I used to buy, when pregnant with ds1, a burger king veggie burger meal at Liverpool St Station and nibble on it for the 25 mins ride home or I couldn't make the journey each day. Both boys were good weights and fine. Anybody will testify I am usually a member of the food police brigade and would never usually eat such things.

lol, I had a friend who was teetotal but craved and drank lager when pregnant. DIdn't drink much and baby was fine. Once she had given birth she hated alcohol again . Maybe you need something 'hoppy???'

Also don't worry about your other child/children ds1 lived on toast, cheese, raw carrots anything I didn't have to cook for nearly 9 months. The only meals he had were when dh cooked of a weekend and apart from being a fussy little oik now he's fine too!!

I do feel for you all. It is jsut the worst thing.

Kanga44 · 23/09/2007 10:18

I can deal with the puking....it was the bleeding that was the most traumatising. One still cooking in there though so think I lost a twin

Hope all of your sickness eases girls

NKd1167739100921 · 23/09/2007 10:42

None of the usual things helped my sickness (tried ginger tea etc) but reflexology made a difference and also taking homeopathic remedies which I still take now at 27 weeks as the nausea only disappeared at 23 weeks and it can still return if I'm tired and/or forget to take the remedies. If you google the Organic Pharmacy in London they may have a site where you could ask advice. They mixed me my remedies and can also post out too. Good luck and I hope you are over it soon as I know how debilitating it can be.

gingerone · 23/09/2007 10:45

I was very sick with mine, the only thing that helped was travel sickness bands, I think you can get them at boots or online. They are basically wristbands with a little bead on them that sit on the pulse point of your wrist....hope that helps.

BroccoliSpears · 23/09/2007 12:46

I'm about 8 wks pg and the only thing I can keep down at the mo is very diluted chocolate milkshake. Everything else I loose within the hour. It's miserable and wretched and I am feeling particularly sorry for myself today for some reason. It's just so wearing. My ribs are bruised from the heaving, my throat is burned with all the acid. Oof. I keep having to look at dd1 and remind myself that it will all be worth it in the end.

The other day I hadn't even eaten anything but the thought of a piece of white bread popped into my mind and I dry heaved for about 5 minutes!

I haven't told people yet so all I'm getting is "ooh - haven't you lost weight!"

Bleh.

At least we're not alone.
