I am now about 8 weeks pregnant with my third baby and suffering with the most chronic sickness all day. I live in Spain and have been to the local Pharmacy, who have given me some tablets that just don't work. I am due to visit an English speaking Clinic next week, but are currently just hanging on there until then.

Does anyone have any tips as to what might help.

Any help is really appreciated.

Lts of good ideas on thsi thread- travel bands, those peggie pops sweets (worked for about 10 days for me, which was some relief), homeopathy- trouble is nothing works for everyone so it pays to try out everything you can. My MW has given me the number of a Homeopath, trouble is she's also my HV and a complete dunce on that front! becoming very tempted thoug h as time drags on, getting sick of the floor of public toilets now (and yesterday some kind, concerned woman trying to talk to me to check I was OK_ except I couldnt talk as I was heaving).

Am 13 weeks tomorrow, praying for a bit of relief!

Jbck · 23/09/2007 13:28

Last time I was sick/nauseous till 24 weeks so when it disappeared at 13 weeks this time thought I'd got off lightly. No chance, it has returned with a vengeance at 33 weeks. I feel loads worse now than at the beginning. I'm seeing the consultant tomorrow so will mention it in case it's something else that can be treated but just feels exactly the same.
Thought I just had a tummy bug last weekend but it hasn't cleared up & is following the usual pg sickness pattern.
I'm going to try the seasickness bands now, does anyone know if they work as well near te end as the start? Please say yes [blegrrrgh emoticon needed]

thank goodness for all the other mums to be out there - you are making me feel that there is hope in all this!! can totally relate to all the feel sorry for ourselves stories - like broccolispears, today is a particularly rubbish one for me as well....sitting this one out on the couch.

have been worrying that my poor offspring will have serious deficiencies given the vege/fruit free diet I am existing on - if it wasn't for all the vitamins I think I'd have scurvy right now.... lemonade, carbs + ben & jerrys are forming the three main pillars of my diet.

nearly at ten weeks - v much hoping that things are on the mend. fingers and toes crossed for everyone else in the same boat.

Current advice in www.hyperemesis.org/forums which although set up in America has really great advice for all and has UK members. It is great to be able to chat online to those going through the same thing.Blooming awful site doesn't have the facility to talk to others but is good for general advice.
I assume if you are using over the counter medication in Spain this is Cariban which is doxyalamine (check the lealet inside) the same as Diclectin in Canada which has been a prescribed nausea and vomiting pregnancy drug for years there .You can look at the www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk and www.motherisk.org website for more information.Correct dosage is important for it to work.
I know how truly awful this time is but keep trying to eat/drink whatever you can and get to the hospital for other medication/rehydrating fluids if you are still struggling.Different things work for different people but I also found acupuncture helped.
Hope you can feel a little better soon.Hang on in there.

Thank you Peachy for adding the Hyperemesis link. I suffered terribly with it when pregnant with my little girl, up until the 8 th month of pregnancy. I wish I had access to this type of support when it happened to me. My MIL made me feel bad and weak willed about it even telling me that I was not being fair on my unborn baby by not eating (I couldn't!) It is a little publicised condition, easily treatable if identified properly. Don't worry about the baby, s/he will get every little bit of nourishment out of you s/he needs, but you can end up a washed out rag. I only drank flat coke for the first 6 months, through a teaspoon as I could not face drinking from a glass (made me sick). Foodwise, I ate two unbuttered crumpets and a couple of oatcakes per day. Baby was healthy and bouncy nevertheless. I don't want to sound tragic but in the day before intravenous drips women could become terribly dehydrated and never recover ( my GP told me that one of the Bronte' sisters died of it, he was trying to cheer me up I think!)If your nausea does not improve after the first trimester and you are becoming poorly and dehydrated as a result, see a doctor!!!

Ah blooming awful doesn't have a chat room no BUT I was the information line host for ages LOL, so I am In Lieu shall we say? lol

Bouquetsofdynomite · 24/09/2007 08:16

If you try and drink anything make sure it has plenty of sugar in it so anything you do keep down at least gives you some nutritional benefit. Avoid diet drinks and check labels on fizzies and squash for sweetners. 7up is sugar-only and most of the shops' own Hi-juice squashes.

jbck travel bands should help at any stage. They help obviously in travel sickness so shouldnt see a prob with you being so far along...sickness is sickness at the end of the day. They are worth a try.
Just sent hubby out for 3 bags of mint imperials as they are helping me not dry wretch!!

susiemj · 24/09/2007 13:22

You can post messages on the hyperemesis site. I've found it very helpful. Messages are a bit quiet at the moment though.

p.s.It was Charlotte Bronte. I told my dad and he said 'you're not going to die are you?' No dad. Just feel awful.

Does anyone else get fed up of people asking them if they feel better? I know they mean well, but after 15 weeks of this already it's getting wearing.

I HAVE EATEN TWO MEALS AND NOT BEEN SICK FOR TWELVE HOURS!!!!!!

claireybee · 24/09/2007 16:58

Aw I really feel for you ladies, i had it really bad with my first, not so bad this time around. I found putting lemon juice in water helped me face fluids, also sparkling water or other fizzy drinks (agree the having something to burp helps). Eating satsumas also helped but ultimately nothing cured it and i think it's just a case of riding it out. This time i had some preggie pops and they worked for mild nausea but not for actual sickness and i took so many of them that now even the thought of them makes me feel sick!

Kanga44 · 24/09/2007 17:34

Sorry for being slow....but what are preggie pops?

DeeLite · 24/09/2007 18:23

I've been horribly sick for 10 days - since Day 1 of Week 7. This is my first but this would definitely put me off having more. I shudder at the thought of having to care and cook for other kids while feeling like this.

Lorayn · 24/09/2007 18:24

DeeLite, as it's your first you don't yet know that feeling you get when its born, believe me its worth it

DeeLite · 24/09/2007 18:32

Thanks . I'm feeling uncertain about the whole thing - much less than when trying to get pregnant - and am trying to convince myself it will all come good in the end but the wee 'un is not helping by making me so sick!

Lorayn · 24/09/2007 18:38

ha, I know that feeling!!!
It's true what they say though, at the end of it all you do mist over a bit and forget, although the tiredness/lack of sleep/sore nipples/aunt flo from hell/teething screams etc can make you forget anything

speak2deb · 24/09/2007 20:27

Pregnancy pops (available on the internet) were the only things that gave me relief from all day nausea. They have ginger in them so help to settle the stomach.

I also ate bowls of cereal for breakfast, kunch and dinner for 12 weeks. I couldn't face anything else.

beeper · 24/09/2007 20:38

With my son it was dry retching that went at 15 weeks. With this one its full blown vomits-ville. What goes in must come out . This morning a whole cup of OJ came out within 30 seconds of being drunk. I agree that white bread and fizzy drinks are the way forward.

colombina · 24/09/2007 21:59

Bless you Deelite, really feel for you but it is a 'temporary' thing, you have to keep reminding yourself that it will pass eventually. When I finally got out of my sick bed to go and buy some maternity clothes - I was as big as a hot air baloon by then - at the H&M shop, I picked up a maternity dress and the label read 'Enjoy Your Pregnancy'. I burst into tears and cried all the way home PS I travelled home by train as the road felt too swervy and made me puke!!!

Peachy · 25/09/2007 09:57

How's everyone feeling? I ahd a really bad day yesterday and ahd to have the sedation pills (the effect avomine has on me), couldn't even keep ANY fluids down, but last night I dreamed of lemonade and I bought a bottle of sprite this morning,a nd fingers crossed its staying down....

Does anyone else get that vile taste in their mouth all day long, really horrible (not just the metallic taste of early pregnancy?).

Lorayn · 25/09/2007 10:05

My mouth has that horrid fluy/hangover type taste, and feels all furry, all day every day
BUT on a good note I woke up to be sick last night at about 2am, the only time I have vomited since monday morning.
And thats without the tablets, I'm trying to not take them unless I need them as they arent particularly nice.
