What is causing this pain

Hi

I am currently 27 weeks pregnant. For the last couple of weeks I've been getting a bad stabbing like pain in the area just below my right breast.

Its not constant. It comes and goes and lasts for only for a couple of minutes each time.

It happens whether I'm standing or sitting or lying down. I get the pain a good few times every day.

This is my first pregnancy so wondering has anyone experienced anything similar.

Watching as I have the same sometimes and I’m 26+5

MrsJaneyp · 18/05/2020 07:24

Hi. I've had this. The midwife told me it was the little one wriggling under my ribs

thebigthreefive · 18/05/2020 07:40

Can you ask the midwife to check your blood pressure and proteins in the urine?

A severe pain in the ribs is a sign of preeclampsia so it's always worth being cautious.

Joans3rddaughter · 18/05/2020 07:44

Severe pain in the ribs is absolutely not a symptom of pre eclampsia.

Williams3001 · 18/05/2020 10:02

It could be your ribs expanding as the uterus grows and pushes everything up. If you're worried, give your midwife a ring and they'll be able to reassure you/explain what it is.

Togepi · 18/05/2020 12:47

Rib pain (or pain in that general area) definitely is a symptom of pre-eclampsia. But it's much more likely to be rib flare from your description. Worth a call to the midwife just to be safe.

maryd84 · 18/05/2020 13:47

Hi, thanks everyone.

Its unusual how the pain comes and only lasts a minute or two and goes again. You'd think that if it was my uterus expanding pushing everything up that the pain would last longer.

I dont think it's the baby causing it either as he wouldn't be up that far.

I checked my blood pressure this morning and it was normal. My urine was checked a couple of weeks ago at my last check up and that was normal too.

My baby is kicking away normally. They said he is in the breech position. I mostly feel him kicking low down near my bladder and cervix.

One other thing I've noticed that's happened during the past few days is my heart racing for no reason. It's happened a couple of times when all I did was turn from one side to the other in bed and it happened again yesterday when I was doing a bit of painting.

I will keep an eye on it and contact the hospital if it continues.

Could be choleostasis
Have bloods done

Williams3001 · 18/05/2020 14:32

Choleostatis is very unlikely unless you’re also experiencing severe itching.

It could also be indigestion (I get stabby pains with indigestion, which can be pretty freaky). Best to get a medical opinion from your midwife on this, as we can only offer our own experiences.

maryd84 · 18/05/2020 15:19

No itching at all.

I do get heartburn sometimes when I lie down at night.

As I posted earlier, rib pain is not a symptom of pre eclampsia. Epigastric pain is a symptom of pre eclamsia.

Cherryrainbow · 18/05/2020 21:39

Heart burn or baby wriggling maybe.

I have fibromyalgia and one of the things that I can get is pain in the chest But normally inflammation with the ribs and sternum it's unlikely to be that tho x

maryd84 · 18/05/2020 23:13

Hopefully the pain is just from everything expanding due to growing baby.

The pain was quite bad this evening. It felt like it was going around to my back too. Had an attack of it lasting about 15 minutes.

Is it possible to have pre-eclampsia without the high blood pressure?

Hello, 27+4 here and I have the exact same as you! The pain is under my right boob on my ribs and comes and goes, the midwife said it's possibly ribs expanding as your organs are pushed up it's a tight squeeze, I also weirdly have the heart racing, mine was happening along with palpitations that felt like my heart was skipping a beat, I went to triage on Wednesday as it was worrying me, came out of nowhere when I was resting, they checked my bloods and turns out I'm extremely iron deficient and blood count was very low so am now on 600mg supplements for 10 days and am feeling better already, I had to wear a heart monitor for 24 hours aswell just to check it was nothing more serious, if you are worried I'd defo just give them a call it's better to put your mind at rest :)

maryd84 · 19/05/2020 00:02

Thanks Bonnie246 and everyone else.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have experienced this. Its makes sense that it would cause discomfort to have everything pushed up to accommodate baby.

I must look into getting my bloods checked. Last time my bloods were checked was at my 12 week appointment.

UrsulaSings · 19/05/2020 00:51

My bloods were all fine at 12 weeks, but went to triage a couple weeks ago for heart palpitations and I was anaemic and that was at 21 weeks, so only a couple months later. I think things can change fairly quickly in pregnancy. I'd give triage or your community midwife a call and see what they say.

cultkid · 19/05/2020 14:42

My friend had serious choleostasis and hardly any itching

DaiJai1066 · 19/05/2020 18:07

I had this and then realised it was worse after eating. I was taking iron tablets which were awful for my liver and gallbladder. I still have it sometimes but put it down to eating. The only thing that made it better was laying completely flat on my back but they don’t recommend this. Hopefully you will feel better soon.

maryd84 · 20/05/2020 23:50

I phoned the hospital today about the pain and they said to call in to get it checked out.

They checked my blood pressure and urine and it was normal so it's not pre eclampsia.

They've sent off bloods to be checked.

The pain seems to be getting worse when it comes and is lasting longer.

I usually get an attack of it after eating and the pain eases when I lie on my back like the previous poster said.

They are going to send me out an appointment for an ultrasound to check my gallbladder.

I bet it's choleostasis
