Hi all very early days for me only 4 weeks I just wondered if people went for private scans or just waited for 12 weeks?

Many thanks and congratulations to you all

I had an early scan due to pain. They can't see baby until around 6 or 7 weeks I think with a heartbeat so if you're going to book one make sure to do so around 7 weeks or it could cause you some anxiety.

Congratulations Smile

@LunaNightSky thank you

I had a scan at 8 weeks, agonising wait but I waiting until 8 weeks as they can't always see the heartbeat before this. Although I was still nverous for the 12 week having the earlier scan 10000% helped me and made me feel better!

I had a scan at 6 weeks and they detected a heartbeat so yeah definitely wait till after 6 weeks make sure they can detect a heart beat so wont be any anxiety involved lol

sel2223 · 13/05/2020 19:41

I had a private scan when I should have been 7+5 going by LMP but baby only measured 6+1.
There was a HB but I was told if I'd gone a day or two earlier there might not have been. I then went for a follow up 2 weeks later when baby measured 8+2.

The second scan was much clearer with a stronger HB and was abdominal instead of transvaginal. Definitely wait till you're 8 weeks + if you can.

I had private scans at 7 weeks and again at 10 weeks . My nhs dating scan isn’t until I’m about 14 weeks ( this Friday )! Feeling anxious 😦

DeeDee9898 · 13/05/2020 20:04

Hi all, I’m currently 6+3 and considering an early scan. Had slight spotting yesterday and cramps which seem to have eased off. I’m thinking for piece of mind though

BabyDust13 · 13/05/2020 20:05

@NishaaS123 @sel2223 thanks ladies I was thinking of going between 7+8

@MichelleOR84 good luck with your next scan I'm sure it will be amazing

@DeeDee9898 I would be careful about going too early unless you are 100% sure when you conceived (ie ivf) otherwise it might be too early to see a HB and that won't give you any piece of mind at all.
I had 2 early scans and was definitely reassured by them, just try and go a bit later if you can

Elouera · 13/05/2020 21:29

Congrats! Can I ask if this was IVF or if you've had any MC's? If so, you might be able to have a viability scan on NHS. At the early pregnancy unit with my last MC, they said they'd be happy to do a viability scan in any subsequent pregnancies.

There was another similar thread last week asking whether going private for a scan was worth it. Many felt it was reassurance to see a heart beat, as its a long wait till the 12 week scan. Unfortunately though, even a HB at 7/8 weeks isn't a guarantee that there wont be issues down the line. x

DeeDee9898 · 13/05/2020 21:38

We were actively trying to was tracking ovulation so I’m fairly certain about dates but like you say I think it’s best to try and hold off. I know it’s going to drive me nuts otherwise though

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/05/2020 21:44

Just the nhs scans- mine was last wk at 13 wks. My first baby just the nhs scans also, they gave me a 12/ 20 and 36 wk scan- the 36 wk scan isn’t at every hospital though. Unless you have additional concerns why do people go before 12 wks?

bluebell94 · 13/05/2020 22:09

I had a private one at 6+6 and saw a little bean with a strong heartbeat, I found it very reassuring as had been very anxious 😊

FourPlasticRings · 13/05/2020 22:12

Had a private one at 8 weeks, having seen the number of, 'No heartbeat at 6/7 weeks' threads on here. Didn't bother with DC2.

BabyDust13 · 13/05/2020 22:17

I had 2 early losses so maybe I'll just speak to my GP and see if she thinks it will be worth it

Thanks everyone for your comments

I was very anxious and, after forcing myself to wait 8.5 weeks, paid for a private scan. I was really glad I did as I saw a little blob with a heartbeat :) and felt reassured.... until 11.5 weeks, when I caved into my anxiety again and had another, before my dating scan at 13.5 weeks. Personally, I felt like I needed the early scans to make it seem real but I’m definitely a worrier! I can imagine the wait is even harder at the moment during the lockdown with less things to distract yourself with. As far as I can remember, the place where I had my scans - in Mothercare - advised you were 8+ weeks. If no heartbeat was found, I think they told you to come back in 10 days for a re-scan in case your dates were off.

LuckyWright · 14/05/2020 07:29

I had a private at 8 + 4 and it made me feel much better and more relaxed! I'd say try to wait until 8 weeks n have a private scan x

Newmummyxx · 14/05/2020 07:46

I had a private scan at 10 weeks, I’m pregnant with my first baby so it was lovely to have my boyfriend there for support and to share the moment. I’m booked in for my nhs scan at 13+1.

BabyDust13 · 14/05/2020 07:53

Congratulations to you all 🥳

I had a private one just for reassurance at 7+6 weeks (measured 7+4 so I’m glad I didn’t go any earlier). It looked like a sea horse 🤣 almost 25 weeks now and all going well. I do recommend them x

Ours looked like Darth Vader at 8 weeks Grin we were due to see very close family and wanted to announce (live far away so if we'd waited until 12 weeks+ it would have been over the phone and it seemed like too good an opportunity to miss - first time grandparents!). But felt a bit foolhardy to tell them, even on the down low, without any 'proof', hence the early scan. I'm not sure about how useful they are for worries (I was anxious and tbh scans reassure me for about a day before I start to worry again, so unless I'm getting scanned daily the benefit for me would be minimal) but I was really glad to have ours. It's a long wait from the BFP to the 12 week!

MindyStClaire · 14/05/2020 16:07

I had scans at 8/9 weeks on all three pregnancies. Two were good news, one revealed a MMC. In all cases I was glad I went - the good news was reassuring, and the MMC was dealt with quicker than if I'd waited to start bleeding or until my 12 week scan. Not planning another pregnancy, but I would definitely go again if I had another.

user1487755366 · 14/05/2020 16:51

I had an early one this week at 9 weeks - thought I was 9+6 and measured at 9+3 so not much difference. I thought it was a great experience for allaying my anxiety, giving me some reassurance and making me feel as if I was really pregnant. They also found twins which was a huge surprise but it was amazing to see 2 jellybeans and two flickering heartbeats.

I've just had my NHS letter through for my 12 week scan which is in a fortnight and I'm going into it far more relaxed. I know things can go wrong but I'm so happy that I've seen something.
