Hi guys

35 weeks here and heartburn and sick feeling seems to have gone up a notch... dr gave me some omeprazole weeks ago and I’ve been taking 20mg a day but the dosage it says allowed is up to 60mg a day?

Has anyone taken that and assume it’s still no effect on the baby? Also I sometimes take a cyclizine if I feel sick too, assume people have taken both?

Thank you

I’ve taken 40mg a day (one in morning one in evening) for about a year now, I’m 34 weeks so was taking it well before I was pregnant for severe gastritis and stomach ulcers (acid inflammation in stomach) and it helps a bit most of the time as long as I’m careful with diet as well, 20mg didn’t help me much at all. The doctor said it was fine for me to stay on this throughout pregnancy and wouldn’t affect the baby!

I was prescribed 20mg morning and night for the first two weeks, at 26 weeks pregnant when I could no longer tolerate the horrendous symptoms I had. The GP said after two weeks, to reduce it to once per day and that I could then experiment with seeing whether one dose every other day would be enough to manage symptoms. It definitely wasn’t. I’m on 20mg per day but am starting to feel this dose is struggling to manage the symptoms again! So I think I’ll be in a similar boat to you as the weeks progress (I’m almost 29 weeks now)!!

@poodles It is really horrid! For me it’s worse at night when i lie down. Just feel my throat is closing up and I have to sit up to burp or let it gurgle constantly...
I will try 20mg a day and only take 40mg if it gets really bad. I can’t tell what foods irritate it though? Can you?

@JKD1982 caffeine, fizzy drinks, fried and spicy foods are terrible for acid reflux. Dairy is really good for keeping it at bay - milk, yoghurt, etc.

Make sure you take it with food and not on its own. It made me vomit if I took it on an empty stomach.

PoodlesAreMySpiritAnimal · 11/05/2020 10:22

It’s awful isn’t it! Before I went onto the tablets, I felt food was getting lodged in my throat at mealtimes. That’s when I called the GP - the sickness and acid were raging at that time too so I was so unhappy/desperate to feel better.
No food triggers for me - all food just seemed to disagree with me in the end and it was so depressing so feel so uncomfortable all day and much of the night. I’m on aspirin as a precautionary measure against pre-eclampsia and the GP said that could be the cause; apparently it irritates the stomach in a similar way to ibuprofen Blush
20mg per day seems enough for me so far - some days I can feel the symptoms fighting back but I’m happy to be a bit uncomfortable, just not to the extent I was! It would have to get pretty bad for me to up the dose. Personally I can take the tablets on an empty stomach without any ill effects but that’s just me.

The maximum I’d go to is 40 not 60. I’ve been on them for about 15 years, GP advised taking the lowest dose possible through out pregnancy, I believe it’s because it depletes calcium from your body.

Alychloe · 11/05/2020 11:24

Hi! Pharmacist here! For the indication you are taking it for you should not exceed 40mg daily, so stick with that :) Cyclizine and Omeprazole are fine to take on the same day.

AlphaJura · 11/05/2020 11:29

I take 20mg a day as suffer with chronic acid reflux. I took it all the way through last pregnancy with no problem. Sometimes I take 2 a day if it's bad (on drs advice). To the poster who said milk is good for it etc and fried foods, spicy are bad. Maybe for some people but not everyone is the same. Milk used to make mine worse! Spicy food was fine. The things that trigger my acid reflux really badly (even if I take omeprozole) are chocolate, coffee, batter and spirits.

JKD1982 · 11/05/2020 15:15

Thank you all! I am going to try and stick to 20mg a day unless it’s a bad day.

Just wondering if any of you who took omeprazole went on to have a baby with colic / gut issues ? Trying to decide whether to continue with it or not I heard someone saying it could link to colic so hoping that’s not the case
