Lockdown craft for future baby!

Hi all! After being lucky enough to have a good 12 week scan I’m starting to mentally plan (and do lots of internet searching!) for lovely baby things! I feel that it’s too early for me to buy things yet but I do love the idea of doing some craft thing that I could put in the baby’s room when he/she is here. I should add that I have no craft skills. I saw a lovely crochet a Miffy the rabbit thing but think it might be beyond me! Has anyone got any ideas, or could you tell me of any crafty projects that you have done pre the arrival of little ones? Thanks!

I haven’t made any toys or anything for baby but I bought a knitting kit to make some booties and mittens (neutral colours because we don’t know what we’re having yet)
I got them from stitch and story - they do really good knitting kits in all variety of skill levels and have really detailed instructions as we’ll as video tutorials if you’re new to knitting or crochet

I made this for my baby's room. Didn't take much skill, just time which I have plenty of at the moment

I learned to crochet during my last pregnancy but only blankets and hats which are much easier then toys. After one slightly wonky attempt it got much better.

For something more ambitious try felting. It is easy and quick to learn and uses minimal equipment. I made 3d animal mobiles for 2 children.

I'm about to attempt a magnetic fishing game.

I’ve been crocheting hats and blankets for baby.
Ive now learnt to knit too.

Baby due in a week so not doing much more than that now.

I embroidered my scan photo for a little keepsake. I'm currently crocheting a blanket and planning to felt a mobile. Dh bought me a sewing machine too, so thinking about done clothes and perhaps a nice stocking for Christmas 😁

I followed this tutorial:

Took a few attempts, but you can use any colours you like and my toddler still sleeps with hers (I made it bigger than the specified size- easily done, just do more stitches and rows). I've made another for DC2 to-be. Currently 20 weeks.

I've been crocheting to keep myself busy, I learnt by watching beginners crochet videos on YouTube.
I've done some animals they aren't to bad once you've picked up the basics of crochet, they are just fiddly as they are done with smaller hooks.
These are some recent ones I've done, a rabbit teddy & duck cuddle blanket, the ducks pattern was free on hobbii.com

You could pick up a box frame and some scrabble tiles and make a nice frame with your names, words like family, love etc..

Buy some wooden letters which you can paint and decorate.

You can buy cross stitch kits which are easy to follow 😊

Ooh, thanks so much guys! I think I’ll start with crocheting a blanket then, as that seems like it’d be easier than toys/hats! X

I learnt to crochet when my partner was in hospital a couple of years ago, but finished this call the midwife blanket for bump a few week ago, it's a really simple pattern

I’ve taken up embroidery and I’m going to embroider and frame this for my son’s room. When we find out the gender of this one I’ll pick something to do for them too.

my auntie made me a cross stitch sampler for all my kids. it has their names, date of birthday, and birth weights on and then stuff like blocks and teddies and dummies. they’re really sweet and all my kids have had them up in their nurseries. plus think cross stitch is relatively easy? i remember doing it when i was a teenager and i picked it up quite quickly.

Emberfoot · 09/05/2020 19:30

I suck at crochet and knitting so I made our baby announcement cards instead, all hubs has to do now is fill in the date, weight, and add a picture.

I made some washable changing mat cloth thingies, so it wasn't all cold and plastic-y to lie the baby on!

myfirsttimehere · 09/05/2020 19:59

I've started a "paint by diamonds" of an elephant to put in baby's room. It'll take a while to complete the whole thing, but I figured it would be a nice keepsake reminder of pregnancy in this lockdown!

I have an Etsy store for children’s prints and have keeping myself busy making loads for my little lady’s nursery. Also planning on sewing some bunting and if I’m being really ambitious, would love to do a felted animal mobile - I’ve seen some beautiful ones but can’t afford £80+ so would love to try my hand at it soon!

More great ideas - thanks everyone!
