Cyst found on ovary while pregnant

Hi all!

I am at 7+5 on my second pregnancy (unplanned, oops, but that's another story...!) and anyway similarly to during my 1st pregnancy at about 6 weeks I went to have a private early viability scan done.
For a good few months prior to this pregnancy I had been feeling as if there was something to the left of my bellybutton just under my ribs, never had it checked out though as I concluded it must just be an aftereffect from my 1st pregnancy.
So when l was at the scan I asked whether they could see any cysts or anything, and the nurse said that actually yes, on my left ovary she could see a 4cm cyst! I was quite surprised. I have had no prior knowledge of ever having had a cyst.
Talking to the scan technician about it she said its perfectly normal to see and that I fact they rarely saw women without some kind of cyst on/around their reproductive organs.
I asked her whether it was dangerous, would it get in the way of the pregnancy/harm the baby and she said normally as baby gets bigger cysts tend to shrink down, and that if they don't they can just be surgically aspirated.

I'm not particularly worried, just wondering if anyone has been through anything similar and could shed some light Grin

haha thank you Smile ! Also I forgot to add they said if you have any pain go in because it can twist around your ovary or something? Rare but if you feel pain to call straight away x

Banaaaaaanarama1 · 09/05/2020 10:51

@quarantinevibes yes I did read that! At the moment it's not pain but I'm vaguely aware of it and can feel it if I think about it... If that makes sense?!

Yeah mine was the same if I sneezed I got a sharp pain there. They nurse said to me if it’s gets twisted I’d know about it as it’s very painful. So I think unless your in a lot of pain don’t worry. They told me the pregnancy hormones normally shrink it to nothing, so hopefully that’s the case for you x

I'm 56 and dc are adults so scans not so advanced in those days. When I had a hysterectomy 5 years ago they found 7 ovarian cysts of various sizes that had been there many years and caused no issues at all through 3 pregnancies. Consultant said most cysts are harmless.

Banaaaaaanarama1 · 09/05/2020 11:46

@FredaFish wow! You're right - we are absolutely spoiled with all the technology we have available now. I'm glad to hear they caused you no issues through your pregnancies. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Hi everyone!

I know this thread is old and probably nobody is interested but just wanted to take a sec to post just in case someone may be experiencing something similar!

Had my 12 week scan the other day. All seems okay with baby, lots of wriggling etc, and I mentioned the cyst to the ultrasound tech including the size it had been at early scan and she had a look and said that it wasn't a 'traditional/true pregnancy cyst' (not sure entirely what that means but didn't want to bother her with too many annoying questions) and so I asked her if it was just a corpus luteum cyst and she said yes. Didn't give me a size or anything but since she wasn't fussed in the least by it i left the scan pretty happy Grin

Suppose next check would be at 20 weeks, would be interesting to see if anything has changed. Anways...irrelevant little update Grin
