Muslins...

I know this is probably the MOST basic question....

But I was after some advice from the more experienced! I'm a first time mum and feel so clueless :(

How many would you recommend getting and what different sizes would be most useful?

I was also wondering if anyone used them to put under the baby's head in the crib for puking incidents? (Tucked under the mattress)

Bigger is better. I think we have 20 ISH and never run out but I put a load of washing on everyday and we're not going out anywhere. More is definitely better! We have a mix, some from John Lewis, some from Lidl, some from when we were babies - all are fine!

I don't put one under the head but know plenty of people that do. As long as it's well tucked in it should be fine.

mynameiscalypso · 08/05/2020 12:45

I agree that bigger is better. We have about 20 although don't use them that much these days (DS is 9 months). Most of ours are pretty cheap - primark, superdrug etc.

BillieEilish · 08/05/2020 12:48

I didn't have a single one! I used a bit of paper towel if I need to. Which wasn't often.

LividLaughLovely · 08/05/2020 12:49

We have 20-30 and use them all.

Need them in every room to hand!

2007Millie · 08/05/2020 12:51

Again, around 20-30 of varying sizes. They were a god send.

Never used for the cot, but I know my friend put one tucked in over the 'mattress' in the pram because she had a sicky baby.

Also, the giant Aden & Anais ones are GREAT for swaddling

HT96 · 08/05/2020 12:52

Totally depends on your baby! My Ds was hardly sick as a baby so probably used 1 a day if that!

How ever we did use large muslins as swaddle blankets! X

firstimemamma · 08/05/2020 12:53

Had 20 or so and used them for many things. One thing I would say though is don't use them to as a buggy sun shade with pegs (if you know what I mean) as this has been proven in experiments to increase the temperature within by 7-10 degrees. I only did this once before knowing this and wish I'd been told before I had the baby.

Dk20 · 08/05/2020 12:56

First baby I had around 20 normal sized ones (the ones from aldi and lidl) and used them over and over and over again.
Second baby I prepared and bought the same amount, he didn't spit up at all we have hardly used them at all. He is 11 months now.

Totally depends on the baby (like most baby related decisions!). With my first I genuinely didn't understand what the point of them was. With number 2 I had to amazon prime loads more because every muslin in the house was dirty and the milk kept coming back up!

everycowandagain · 08/05/2020 13:27

And yes I used them on the mattress but also on the changing mat otherwise it went everywhere. My second had terrible reflux, and no weaning does not make it better it just makes it worse to clear up...

happymummy12345 · 08/05/2020 13:33

We never had them. We used bibs for when he had his bottles and wipes or tissue if we needed to

MichelleOR84 · 08/05/2020 13:39

My newborn spit up so often we ended up buying so many. We started off with a pack of 6 and after a few weeks we had about 15- 20 lol and even then I was constantly washing them to keep up . We use to go through 2 or 3 a day as a minimum . We bought the standard size ones you find in most stores.

Aria2015 · 08/05/2020 13:46

I had loads and loads. They are so useful and you can use them for other things like dusting etc.. after you're done using them for baby. I never had the big ones, just the standard sized. Had a bundle in every room and a few in every bag. I did used to cover the pram base in one for spit up accidents too.

DappledThings · 08/05/2020 13:56

I wouldn't get many, you have no idea if you are going to have a sicky baby or not. I bought a pack of 10 normal sized ones and they barely got used.

Was given a pack of three giant ones and never used. Had no idea what they were for. They went to the charity shop.

RubyDreamsOfRainbows · 08/05/2020 14:01

We had 7 of the big ones and they were the best when DD was newborn. We used them for everything like mopping up posset and as blankets for tummy time or out at groups. In a pinch I used one as a flat sheet over a travel cot mattress but I wouldn't usually recommend anything loose in a cot with a newborn.

Now DD is 15mo and we use the dozen or so smaller muslins we had (which were also useful early on) for cleaning up hands/face/table after meals - so we go through at least 3/day. They're better than wipes, much less wasteful & cheaper 😃

starfishmummy · 08/05/2020 14:04

Yes. I had a puker and used to put one under his head so I could just change that rather than the whole sheet.

Instarted with one pack and just added as needed

Keyboard91 · 08/05/2020 16:40

We have a cmpa baby and go through 20+ a day!

Also use in pram over mattress, on changing mat and under him in his swing/bouncer. Also handy as lightweight blankets.

00100001 · 08/05/2020 16:42

Two... Hardly used them

LexiM · 09/05/2020 07:37

This is really helpful! What brands would people recommend? Also for larger ones for swaddling?

Thanks 😀

AllTheCakes · 09/05/2020 07:55

I used lots while breastfeeding to clear up my leaky boobs. We had one in every room and changed them daily.

You don’t need expensive ones. After a few washes I couldn’t tell the difference between my nice ones and my supermarket ones.

20viona · 09/05/2020 07:55

About 20 just your bog standard ones you get from boots matalan etc. From 2-8 months uses about 5 a day as she had reflux. Couldn't leave the house without a few v

UsernameNotValid · 09/05/2020 08:06

#1 was a pukey baby and I hadn't heard of them until my health visitor recommended them for tucking on the head end of his mattress to save changing sheets 20x a day. Think we had about 20 then passed them on

With #2 I bought a bundle of 10 from eBay, boil washed them and they did us fine as she wasn't as pukey - mostly used on my matress to save it from my leaky boobs, as an emergency change mat, blanket, comforter and even a nappy at one point. We were given a set of 2 huge Aden & Anaïs ones which I think we're for swaddling - never used them for that as she hated being swaddled but 7 years in she uses them for her dolls :)

cluelessmop · 09/05/2020 08:46

We use them as comforters as we always have them about. They're so handy. Get 20

quarantinevibes · 09/05/2020 09:14

I had a few large ones for the changing bag but didn’t really use them at home tbh. I’d just wipe up any spit up with the bib or a tissue. But I do have 3 other very young children so a crap load of washing that I don’t want to add to lol Grin
