If you've had a cesarean did you go home within 24 hours?

I am having a c-section in July and am obviously a little anxious about the hospital stay afterwards. I'm aware that a number of things could prevent me from going home as quickly as I'd like. But if everything goes smoothly and baby and I are fine, will they let me go home within 24 hours?

Have you had a c-section and been able to go home within a really short period of time?

I was about 30 hours but purely because I had gestational diabetes and they had to test me and the baby for 24 hours after birth. I also needed a prescription for an injection after the c section that took a long time coming. Otherwise I'm confident I would have been discharged within less than 20 hours.

Ohhgreat · 06/05/2020 21:11

We would have been, had the doctor not been too busy on the children's ward to come and do our babies checks! We waited for her for like 5 hours, otherwise yes would have been home in 24hrs

When I had my second baby, I arrived at 7am at the hospital for one last scan (baby was breech, last scan to see if he'd turned). I was in the operating theatre by 9am, baby born around 9 30. I was home by lunch the next day. It would have been sooner but took a while for the discharge papers to be done. It can be very quick.
I was in a bit longer for my third as she was born late afternoon and then she was slightly jaundiced so was in for 3 nights.

I'm really hoping they will want me out as soon as possible. Absolutely dreading being in the hospital without partner and if the Coronavirus situation hasn't massively improved Sad

I would have done - hospital had a policy of enhanced recovery and would have discharged me with morphine - had baby not needed special care.

RubbishQueen · 06/05/2020 21:15

We were 25 hours, would have been quicker but the doctor was busy. It was my 2nd though.

I had an emergency c section at 9PM on a Sunday night and was discharged (after some insistence on my part) at 11PM the following night. Hospital wanted me to stay in so they could provide further assistance with establishing breastfeeding which I was a bit Hmm about as I was in a private room and only had one very brief check to remove my catheter in the first 20 or so hours and virtually no other contact with midwives, who seemed to be busy on the main ward

Aberforthsgoat · 06/05/2020 21:17

Yep. I was out in exactly 24 hours. I had to be able to walk to the loo unaided and baby had to have done two wet and two dirty nappies I think before we could be discharged. Also had to show that I could breast feed him or that I would be happy to give him formula

TiggeryBear · 06/05/2020 21:19

With my 1st the csection was done at lunchtime & we left the following day at about 3pm.

SquigglePigs · 06/05/2020 21:19

No unfortunately. DD was born Tuesday morning and we went home on Friday afternoon. Having said that they offered to discharge me on Wednesday but then we had some minor complications so had to stay.

scrambledtofu · 06/05/2020 21:19

WoW, I am
British but not in the UK. I was in hospital for 9 days afterwards with my first (emergency) and a week with the others (I have had 4 c-sections). I didn't even stand up for the first 24 hours!

DanceMonkey19 · 06/05/2020 21:20

Yes. Baby born shortly before 2pm, discharged before 11am next day 🙂

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 06/05/2020 21:20

What happens if you try and discharge yourself?

I had an emergency section and was discharged 18 hours later as they needed the bed

superram · 06/05/2020 21:21

Baby born at 10am Monday, out 6pm Wednesday after I had lost a lot of blood. Could have left earlier.

olivesandpecans · 06/05/2020 21:23

First baby emergency csection, 5 days due to my complications. Dc2 24 hours after elective section. Third baby csection is next week and have been told they will get me out as quickly as possible (dh allowed in theatre and then has to leave before I go to the ward under COVID rules)

dementedma · 06/05/2020 21:24

I've had 3 Cs. First one was emergency breech and i was in hopital for nearly a week. Other two were for a few days. Dont be in a rush to get home. Your body needs to recover

herewegoloobyloo · 06/05/2020 21:26

My first CS was at 9am and was out by 4pm next day. Second baby was born at 1pm and out by 3pm next day. Both times we were sat ready to go but had to wait for discharge medication and paperwork to be done. X

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 06/05/2020 21:26

3 days after an EMC.

mynameiscalypso · 06/05/2020 21:27

I was a little over 24 hours but only because my c section was first thing on a Friday and it took a lot of time on the Saturday to get everything sorted. I had agreed with my consultant and midwife that - bar any kind of emergency - I would only be staying in hospital for one night and it was a priority that I was let home as soon as possible. One midwife tried to keep me in for ridiculous reasons and I did threaten to discharge myself; luckily a doctor came along and said I was totally fine to go home.

lettersbyowl · 06/05/2020 21:27

July is a while away yet in the scheme of coronavirus. Try not to stress yourself about a situation that could very likely change. It may be that they do allow partners at your hospital but that point, it may be that the hospital you deliver at is completely "green" by then with no covid patients etc.

NoIDontWantToBuildASnowman · 06/05/2020 21:31

22 hours and 23 hours, and at least 3 hours of the second one was waiting for the pharmacy to deliver the pain meds. I was packed, baby was in a car seat... no meds!

My advice is to drink LOADS when you have your catheter out (helps with milk coming in too), prove you can pee, and keep asking, calmly and confidently, to be discharged. Good luck!

PaquitaVariation · 06/05/2020 21:31

Three nights with an emergency section, two nights with my second planned section. I wouldn’t have been physically ready to go home any sooner.

gonewiththerain · 06/05/2020 21:32

I was in 36 hours after my section. Partly because it was done in the early hours and partly because they were very busy and discharge took ages. I’m hoping to be out a bit quicker this time.

Rebelwithallthecause · 06/05/2020 21:34

Following as mine is in a week too
