If you've had a cesarean did you go home within 24 hours?

I am having a c-section in July and am obviously a little anxious about the hospital stay afterwards. I'm aware that a number of things could prevent me from going home as quickly as I'd like. But if everything goes smoothly and baby and I are fine, will they let me go home within 24 hours?

Have you had a c-section and been able to go home within a really short period of time?

@lettersbyowl I hope so, I had a family member die a few weeks ago of Covid-19. He had the same health condition I have (nothing major and not on any high risk list) and it has given me horrible anxiety about staying in hospital.

I don't want to be crazy and start demanding to be discharged, but I feel like anything longer than 24 hours (if baby and I are fine) is too long and I'll be desperate to leave.

Christ this is fast, I was an exception and spent a month in hospital after with follow up visits for a year, ( got full blown eclampsia after she was delivered and then developed post partum renal failure, amongst other things, all fine now though) .

I was still in the recovery room at 24 hours,,never mind in the ward.

Bluntness100 · 06/05/2020 21:38

Op, don’t stress about it, you won’t give a shit when you’re there, if you need keeping in, you’ll know it and stay, if you don’t they will release you. Covid will be the last thing on your mind.

2nd time round I was out in 25hrs and a few of those were waiting for my drugs to arrive (anti coagulants).

But please, prepare to be there longer. With DS1 he was born on a Sunday and we finally left at 10pm on the Friday. He was ill and on IV antibiotics. Part of my distress was my belief we'd be going straight home.

Please prepare for both. And good luck!

I had my c section at 11am and was out the next day at 3pm

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 06/05/2020 21:42

26 hours

But again would have been slightly quicker if the paperwork had been done earlier

It was supposed to be two nights but the woman next to me snored like an animal being slaughtered...so i begged them to let me go

marvellousmaplesyrup · 06/05/2020 21:45

I went home just over 24 hours after my section.

The post natal ward was extremely busy and to be honest it was hell on earth. 6 new mums, 6 new babies and a stream of visitors to each bay. I didn't get a wink of sleep the night after my section, so begged to be allowed home to my own bed.

All they wanted me to do was have a wee after having my catheter taken out.

ScarfLadysBag · 06/05/2020 21:47

Yes, I had a EMCS but was v straightforward and I was home after about 28 hours. There was a slight delay while waiting for the paediatrician to check baby before we left, not because of my condition.

BlodwynBludd · 06/05/2020 21:47

Emcs, 4 days. Elcs 19 hours after baby came out.

ScarfLadysBag · 06/05/2020 21:49

And they encouraged me to get up and walk about around six hours after my op, and took the catheter out. I really think getting mobile so early helped me a lot. I found it much harder to get about when I'd been lying down too long so I made sure to get up and about, even just for a little walk around the cubicle, frequently.

amazedmummy · 06/05/2020 21:51

I would have been but I stayed an extra night for help with breastfeeding.

Bumsmet · 06/05/2020 21:53

I’m not in the UK. First emcs I was in 6 nights. Second scheduled was in 5 nights.

Cannot imagine going home after 24 hours, I could hardly walk.

It’s a horrible situation at the moment, but it’s best not to rush. You don’t want to end up having to go back to hospital!

Went in 7am Wednesday, had c-section @ 12noon discharged 7pm Thursday. We had complications but only one night in hospital xx

Milbo · 06/05/2020 22:01

3 days for my first and 18 hours for my second. My first had problems feeding so we could have escaped sooner.

NormalPeople1 · 06/05/2020 22:18

Yes it would be interesting to hear from mums who've recently had c-sections under COVID-19 conditions. My hospital is saying they're keen to get women in and out super quickly. Just wondering if that's happening for c-sections.

farmertom · 06/05/2020 22:29

Yes, I had my baby in February. Elective c section, I was home the next morning, within 24hrs.
Lovely experience and very manageable. Good luck OP and congratulations 😊

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 06/05/2020 22:30

Oops

Should have said that was baby number 3

Baby number 2 was c section as well, she was born At 9 in the morning on the thursday, by lunchtime on the Saturday I’d been discharged and was shopping in mother care Grin

When i say shopping i mean sitting on a chair in the shop and getting dh to show me stuff..l

Sadie789 · 06/05/2020 22:33

I was turfed out 24 hours after a c section.

Arrived home with my eyes rolling about in my head and not knowing what day it was.

It was way too soon but they obviously needed the bed Hmm

wizzywig · 06/05/2020 22:36

3 days each time. I couldnt walk at all a day afterwards

Murfs · 06/05/2020 22:52

Ah best of luck X. I had and emergency section and was out about 48 hours after. It seemed the right length of time I wouldn't of been ready to leave hospital before that. But everyone recovers differently. It took me a bit to get up and moving in hospital but also hard to rest I was on a very busy ward. Best of luck too

NotMyUsualNameNoSiree · 06/05/2020 22:55

Yes.

EMCS. First baby. I lost a reasonable amount of blood (just under a litre, so didn't need a transfusion).

Out within 24 hours.

In some ways I wish I'd stayed a second night (pre COVID, obvs), but I just wanted to get home.

ShowOfHands · 06/05/2020 22:58

12hrs with my first

24hrs with my second

I had feeling back in recovery both times so within an hour and was then up, showered and walking, catheter out etc within 3hrs.

Best thing you can do for recovery is get up ASAP.

ilikebigbuttsandicannotlie · 06/05/2020 23:07

I had a c section at 10am abs discharged at 1pm the next day as we were waiting for paperwork. I was ready and dressed at 9am waiting to leave Grin

crazycatbaby · 06/05/2020 23:08

Yes, 28 hours with my elective. In all honesty it was awful and I felt like I'd died after the short drive home and going upstairs to bed. I couldn't stop shaking, it was like I was in shock. Luckily my lovely, ex midwife, mother in law (who disapproves of how soon then kick you out) came round and looked after us for a couple of nights as my husband and toddler were both poorly. She let me sleep, looked after the baby, gave me my pain relief as I had no idea what time or day it was, and rang the out of hours the next day for me to get me stronger pain relief.

RyvitaBrevis · 06/05/2020 23:14

You need to find out from people who have had a C-section since coronavirus. I've heard they are doing everything they can to get women out quickly, and definitely within 24 hours where possible. My local maternity service has set up a Facebook page where you can ask this kind of question, might be a good idea to see if there's anything similar in your area.
