Hi,

Pregnant dentist working in a mixed practice here, 20 weeks today :) Was just wondering if anyone's in the same boat and what your plans are for work/maternity going forward.

Initially I started self isolating 17th March as per Bojo's instructions re pregnant women. My practice was still seeing patients face to face at the time. I am now going in once a week to speak to patients over the phone and prescribe if necessary etc...AAA.

My plan was to work (I'm part time) until the end of August as I'm due 22nd Sept but there is so much uncertainty about what dentistry will actually be like in the coming months! A big concern of mine is PPE. I need to give my practice adequate notice before I go off on mat leave which is why I'm a little worried at the moment- I don't want to leave it too late and put myself in a position where I'm forced to work when I don't feel comfortable/guidelines advise against it.

Anyone in a similar situation? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi, might be useful having a look at the RCOG occupational guidance for pregnant healthcare workers. Essentially recommends no face to face patient contact after 28 weeks. If this can’t be accommodated at work then you can be placed on special leave (in some cases sick leave) until you start maternity leave. Given that it’s probably going to take a long time to get dentistry up and running again you are probably safe sticking with your original plan?
