This week I had a Glucose Tolerance Test but due to COVID they took blood but I was told didn’t have to drink the solution or wait for the second blood test.

Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know how an accurate test can be done with one set of bloods.
Thanks

I am having the same thing in a few weeks - I think it's standard procedure at the moment to cut down the amount of time you spend in the clinic or hospital.

From what I understand the blood test is actually the more accurate/important test for GD. Smile

Sorry not to help more, but it's definitely not just you! X

I had Gestational diabetes in my last pregnancy and i think its the HBa1 test or something like that lol. Anyway it can tell like an average blood sugar over a longer period of time so believe it is more accurate than the GTT. I wonder if thats standard practice as im due my GTT in a few weeks... x

Oooh. Interesting. I've got one of these booked- very up for a single blood test as opposed to two plus a massive wait!

A gtt will show up changes in glucose metablosim earlier then just a fasting blood glucose. So they are often used as a clinical test for the likelihood that you are developing diabetes or are in the very early stages of diabetes.
If you already have diabetes then your fasting glucose levels will be elevated and you will be diagnosed.
If your really worried glucometers can be bought from most pharmacies and its pretty easy to run a gtt from home/ just generally monitor your glucose levels.

I had a GTT recently and it was the full test for me (for anyone wondering if theirs will be changed it will just depend on trust. Mine said the GTT is the most accurate for gestational diabetes so they still want to do them).
The only change was that for the 2 hour wait I could go to my car, or antenatal waiting etc rather than sitting in phlebotomy! It was fine and easy. The hospital was so empty anyway compared to pre-corona!
