Membrane Sweep

I'm 38+1 week pregnant and have had a membrane sweep today because of reduced movements the last couple of days. I was told my cervix was already really soft anyway and I was felt around 1cm dilated already. I am back at the hospital on Sunday morning for another monitoring but could I go into labour anytime soon now?

I was due Xmas Eve one year. Had a sweep evey evening from 38 - 39weeks..
Dd was a week late!!

Mummyspider27 · 01/05/2020 18:17

My first sweep there was nothing going on with my cervix so had no effect. My second I was 2cm and it kicked off about 17hrs later x

My first sweep I was dilated around 1 cm and was told it could happen very soon, nothing did. Had another one a couple of days later and contractions started after about 10 hours.

I had a sweep yesterday afternoon. Was told I was 2cm, definitely had some wee twinges since but nothing more.

With my first I had repeated sweeps which didn't seem to do much.

Is this your first? How are your movements now?

Had 2 sweeps at 40 weeks.
Absolutely nothing happened

Yes this is my first, and her movements are still very low compared to normal. Just had a spicy curry and spicy food usually gets her moving but not really felt much

I'd be tempted to call the hospital again and say you're still worried about the reduced movements. Hope everything is ok.

JasonPollack · 01/05/2020 20:09

I would also ring again about your reduced movement. Better to be safe X

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 01/05/2020 20:35

Agreed, you should be seen for reduced movements ASAP. I had a sweep and was under observation, sweep did nothing and they induced me because of the reduced movements.

Sweeps worked for me both times. My first, had a sweep at midnight at 4 days overdue, was 1-2cm dilated already, went into labour fully by 5pm. Baby arrived at 3pm the following day 😫 long old labour!

Had my second recently. Sweep at 11am on my due date. Was again 1-2cm. Contractions started at 6pm-ish. Baby arrived at 11.58pm Grin

My labour was more long than anything else. I was due on the Sunday 30th august 2015, I was booked in for a sweep originally on the Wednesday, but I started having contractions on the Tuesday so I decided to see if things would progress naturally. They didn't so I ended up having a sweep at 3pm on the Friday (40+5).
I got to the hospital at 9 that evening, was in the birth centre by 10.30, had my waters broken around 2am, then gave birth at 6.58am the Saturday morning (40+6).
It didn't hurt or feel uncomfortable at all and it did help move things along (the head wasn't fully engaged so things wouldn't have progressed on their own).

I’ve had a sweep in two of my 3 pregnancies and I was in active labour within 12 hrs both times but I was also 41 weeks.

Did you have monitoring when you reported the reduced movements? I would echo some of the other posts that a sweep is not standard management for reduced fetal movements and unless movements are now back to normal I’d be phoning maternity triage. Of course we don’t know the full story and you may have had a full assessment and been reassured already :)

Moo678 · 02/05/2020 08:55

Sorry just read that movements are low rather than reduced - maybe baby is just getting into position....

onetiredmummy13 · 02/05/2020 16:33

My first pregnancy I had a sweep on the Monday and I was 2-3cms felt crampy afterwards and lost my plug next day but got induced on the Friday like I was supposed to. Didn't need pessaries just had waters broke. I was 39weeks think it only helps if your going into labour anyway 🤷‍♀️ good luck!
