Low Papp-a, anyone experienced this?

I received a call today from the hospital after my combined test to say low risk of Down syndrome & Edwards but my placenta has low Papp-a, they’ve asked me to pick up a prescription tomorrow for aspirin & advised I will have more scans to check baby’s growth. Just wondering if anyone is in the same position or has been previously? I googled and scared myself a bit!

Welcome to the club that nobody wants to be part of! Have at look at the thread called 'Struggling' - I've put a heap of info on there. Let me know if you can't find it.

Summary of what I wrote: if you don't smoke, follow medical advice and have a

I have low PAPP-A and currently 31 weeks, have my first growth scan on Friday but midwife has been happy with my bump measurements at each appointment so 🤞 I'm on a Facebook group for low Papp-a and there are so many positive stories on there!

SJC2489 · 30/04/2020 07:53

Thank you! I will look at the thread. I don’t smoke either so I took that as a positive.

Low Papp a and baby measuring too big at 32 week growth scan (97th percentile!) Try not to worry -they keep a closer eye on you and it usually won’t cause issues.

WhatWouldPennyDo · 30/04/2020 08:13

How low was your Papp-a? Mine came back low, we got a high risk of Down’s but NIPT came back as low risk. No one has actually talked to me about my blood results and midwives don’t respond to calls or texts Angry

CoolNoMore · 30/04/2020 08:34

Whoops, that got cut off! Was going to say that being a non-smoker, happy to follow medical advice and with a reasonable living situation improves everything massively. Induction is probably more likely, but we can cope with that!

@coolnomore can you please share the link to the thread. There's quite a few threads with struggling in the title. Thanks.

I should have just done this in the first place...

SJC2489 · 30/04/2020 15:21

@WhatWouldPennyDo she didnt tell me how low and because I didn’t know what it was I didn’t think to ask, she just told me to collect the aspirin and that I would get some extra scan dates after the 20 week scan.

I had this with my son - we had a couple of extra growth scans but no aspirin. He was completely fine, did the harmony test and he came back low risk for Edwards. He's now a big and Bonny 2yr old!

SleepyBoPeepy · 30/04/2020 22:01

Lowish here.
0.44(can’t remember unit) and low was classed as 0.4, but combined with other factors it put our risk for DS at 1 in 148, high risk was classed as 1 in 150. So we were on the cusp for everything!
We decided against further testing for DS as the risk of miscarriage from investigations was higher than the chance of actually having DS and there were never any structural abnormalities seen at scans that pointed towards DS.
Anyway, due to a few factors (including low PAPP-A) I had to start taking aspirin and had extra growth scans and consultant appointments. Everything went fine though and consultant was happy for me to deliver ‘as normal’ so I had my baby in the local MLU Smile

SleepyBoPeepy · 30/04/2020 22:02

Think the growth scans were every 4 weeks after 20 week scan.

SquidgyPeach · 30/04/2020 22:24

I've had it in both of my pregnancies, my son was born absolutely fine and not very small for his gestation 37 weeks & 6lb2 they've never told me to take aspirin.

I was induced with my son at 37 weeks based on my last growth scan and Low-PappA and his measurements predicted he'd be born about 4.5-5lb so even if measurements come up a little small, theyre not always totally accurate. He was born perfectly healthy...

Currently 34 weeks and babies growth is fine also, in both pregnancies I've just had regular growth scans. Wasnt told how low my PappA was this time but as ive been there before im not worrying too much.

Fueledwithfairydustandgin · 01/05/2020 06:55

I had this with my son and was worried but it came to nothing. I Didn’t need aspirin and he had no problems. I took the positive and enjoyed the extra scans I got.

Liveforholidays · 01/05/2020 07:20

There is a Facebook group called 'Low papp a pregnancy support group' which you can join. You will find all the women on there arrive with lots of questions and concerns and are massively reassured by the good news stories that are on there.

Lady7978 · 01/05/2020 11:58

Thanks @CoolNoMore

kayleesmithy · 01/05/2020 12:03

Yes I had it . Had growth scans and told to take aspirin everyday and then stop at 36 weeks.

Baby was born on the 18th of April and weighed 6.5 pounds.

All it is is keeping extra eyes on baby's growth.

CoolNoMore · 01/05/2020 14:16

No problem! This really is one of those great opportunities to know a bit more of what's going on, but of course it all sounds a bit terrifying when thrown at you with little explanation. I've got a scan at 28 weeks next week and I'm really looking forward to knowing a bit more. Forewarned is forearmed etc.

RedRobin7 · 02/05/2020 09:41

I had my first growth scan yesterday and they're really pleased with baby's growth and the placenta looks good. I'm 31 weeks and baby already estimated to weigh 4lbs right now, if he carries on growing at this rate he'll be an 8lb-er! I've been so worried up until now but didn't need to be.
