Anyone had a section at 38w

My section was booked for 39w but the doctor has brought it forward to 38+2. There is a couple little things that are the reasons for this but they've said they are not serious problem reasons and they are bringing it forward because they can. But although I'm really excited about meeting the baby earlier than expected I'm a bit worried 38+2 is still quite early.
The reasons they gave me is 1. The babies cord blood flow resistance is below 5th centile. I don't understand what that means but the mw at hospital said it isn't considered a problem 🙄 and 2. I'm on metformin.

Anyone got experience of a baby born by section at 38ish weeks and could they breathe OK when born?

My DD by section at 38+5, I had been booked elective section at 39 weeks, but waters went early. She did struggle when she came out, they briefly held her above the curtain before taking her over for checking, but her breathing wasn't great with fluid on the lungs, which is pretty common in sections. so they took down to the special care unit pretty fast. It wasn't all dramatic, obviously not ideal and I didn't get to properly see or hold her, but they did their best to reassure me. There was a slight concern over infection as I tested positive for strep b, and my waters had gone early with can be a warning sign, so she had a cannula put in to her hand to have antibiotics as a precaution. They eventually bought her back to me about 4 hours later, I hadn't been able to go see her, but by husband had. Thankfully i was given a private room so didn't have to wait on a ward, and I was so busy recovering myself the time went quick. Ultimately she was fine, very sleepy, but we were discharged after 2 nights. She is now a healthy active intelligent 2year old. I sometimes feel a little sad that I missed the first hours of her life, but the experience wasn't traumatic and everyone kept me informed and reassured. I would still choose to have another section.

That would be one of the worst things having your baby taken away like that but I guess lucky she came back healthy. Did you have to stay longer in hospital to have her monitored? When my first dc was born he was emergency section. I was absolutely hysterical and they gave me a shot of something that knocked me out for an hour. I can't tell you how many times I got his dad to tell me about that 1st hour that I missed.
I've got myself a bit worked up thinking about what's going on with my babies cord and then worrying if he'll be able to breathe after delivery.

Hi OP

My baby was born at 37 plus 1 by emergency section as I had a complete low placenta and it fell away at home one night

Son was born in an emergency situation of course and I didn’t see him for an hour due to blood loss but he was absolutely fine cried out straight away.

I also was lucky to have a private room with DS next to me. Was walking within 12 hours and discharged very quickly- I would opt for a c section next time it was a positive experience

Take care x

@delbelleber i had twins via section at 36+4. Both where fine and no breathing issues. Twin 1 was just a bit shocked so just needed rubbing and then cried. Twin 2 came out crying. They were 5lb 5oz and 6lb 3oz. Neither went to special care.

Sunshinedayze · 29/04/2020 21:03

Yep I had my DD at 38+1 as I also had GD on insulin and metmorphin. No issues with breathing or anything, she had been measuring 98th percentile plus but was born at 6 lbs 13 so not the massive babs we were told wee were expecting.

BirdIsland · 29/04/2020 21:05

I had an EMCS at 37 weeks due to preeclampsia. Baby was absolutely fine, no special care needed (and she was little, 5lb5). We stayed in for four days but that was because I'd lost a lot of blood and my blood pressure was still all over the place. Anything after 37 weeks is basically full term.

THNG5 · 29/04/2020 21:05

My dd was born by planned c section at 36+6. No problems at all. She was a big baby though, already weighing 3kg500.

HMSSophie · 29/04/2020 21:07

I had twins at 37 plus 5. Both 6lbs neither needed resuss or IC. Try not to worry your baby will be in the best possible place. Good luck

Hoggleludo · 29/04/2020 21:09

I had a baby at 32 weeks. Which was the size of a 26 week baby

And a baby at 35 weeks. Who was the size of a 30 week baby.

Both emergency c sections.

Both alive. Healthy and happy

Hoggleludo · 29/04/2020 21:10

@BirdIsland

Awe. Me too. Though my 35 week baby was 3lbs

RenegadeMrs · 29/04/2020 21:11

EMCS at 36 +1 and DD was absolutely fine, and with me from birth till we left the hospital. I think from 37 weeks is considered full term?

Lauren83 · 29/04/2020 21:12

Failed induction followed by non urgent ELCS at 38.1, no problems at all home within 24 hours

Cannyhandleit · 29/04/2020 21:12

My baby was born in dec at exactly 38w, I was on met form in but had to start taking insulin in the last week and baby's growth dropped over a centiles line so they brought my date forward from 39w. Baby was absolutely fine, 8.2lbs and we were home the next afternoon! He lost 1lb in the week after birth and took a wee while to get back to birth weight (I had to top up with ebm for a few days) but other than that no issues at all!

orlarose · 29/04/2020 21:14

Some hospitals give steroids pre 39 weeks, can you ask for this to help ease your worry. Ultimately though they wouldn't bring the date forward if the benefits didn't outweigh the risk.

Shelley54 · 29/04/2020 21:14

DS2 was a planned section at 38 weeks. I was at home 25hrs later.

Blondiecub0109 · 29/04/2020 21:17

ELCS at 38+2. He was breech and in a really awkward, high position. Also over 4 kg. Bit of tugging to get him out, warning that he may not cry and he won’t know he’d been born - came out screaming the place down and meconium everywhere. Handed to be after delayed cord clamp and weighting.

All the very best to you - hopefully you’ll get a lovely golden hour this time

foodtoorder · 29/04/2020 21:18

I had sections at 34 and 37 weeks with my children for pre existing health condition that complicates pregnancy.
Both babies were fine with a very short stay in special care.

foodtoorder · 29/04/2020 21:20

I should say because of this I didn't get to see them for a couple hours but if that meant them and me being healthy then was worth the sacrifice.
Couldn't fault the care and communication from the special care unit in that short time I wasn't with them

Terriergrrrrrrrr · 29/04/2020 21:22

Son came by emergency caesarian at 38wks and was absolutely fine, twin daughters by emergency caesarian at 33wks4days and they were fine, breathed, breastfed. Don't worry about your section.

welshweasel · 29/04/2020 21:22

I had a section at 35 weeks and one at 38 weeks. Both babies completely fine and back with me after they had been quickly checked over. Have you had steroids?

FilthyforFirth · 29/04/2020 21:25

I had my DS at 38 weeks exactly by planned section as he was breach. Full term is 37 weeks so I wasn't worried at all.

I had to have some steroid injections but that was it and he was absolutely fine.

I had horrific HG so was allowed to have him 2 weeks early. Good luck.

Delbelleber · 29/04/2020 22:12

Thank you all for your responses.
I'm not sure if I'll be given steroids. I'm back in on Friday so I'll ask then.

Does anyone know about the cord blood flow resistance thing?
Many thanks.

My twins were born at 37+6. They were 7lbs5 and 6lbs4, no special care required. Twins are classed as full term at 38 weeks, so you’ll be absolutely fine! Good luck!

Jesskir89 · 29/04/2020 23:11

I had an emergency c section at 38 plus 6 as he was back to back. Came out screaming with a right good set of lungs. Good luck x

CanIDigIt · 29/04/2020 23:29

My 2nd was planned C-sect booked for 39+5
I laughed at them because I knew I would not make 39 weeks. My 1st was 38+1, natural delivery.

2nd breech but they refused to book earlier than 39 anything. So my elective booked became emergency 38+2 (mum knows best)

No one batted an eyelid at either of my children born at 38 weeks.

No steroids. No anything. Perfectly happy, healthy and fabulous children.

Please don't worry.
