Weight loss when pregnant

Just wondering if anyone has experience of losing weight whilst pregnant. I’m a FTM so not sure what to expect!
When I went for my 12 week scan, I was weighed and noticed I had lost 3lbs, which I was fine with as I had been quite sick.
My partner just mentioned that I look like I’ve lost a bit of weight (even though I have a bit of a bump), so I just weighed myself and I’ve lost a further 7.5lbs. So in total I’ve lost my 10.5lbs since getting pregnant.
I had a scan last week and baby is doing fine but I’m a bit concerned that maybe I should be starting to gain weight rather than lose it?
I’ve not been able to arrange my 16 week MW appointment so I’m not sure if I should ring her to see what she says?

Might be worth a call just to put your mind at rest, but I also lost weight due to sickness and struggling to eat. Are you eating okay? The sickness can be relentless and those with it can lose weight, but it’s definitely worth mentioning to your midwife to make her aware and to give you piece of mind. I was prescribed sickness medication which isn’t perfect but it does help to keep stuff down. Xx

@la1ka thanks for your reply! I hope the tablets are working for you!! My sickness was really bad at the start but I’m only really being sick once or twice a day now and it’s mainly before meals. And especially over the last two weeks, I’ve been eating anything I can get my hands on (oops!). I’ll try and give her a ring tomorrow.

Hi i also lost weight from my booking appointment, i lost 11lbs in total right up till i was 20 weeks. Im now 24 weeks and gaining, still not at my weight at my booking appointment but its now coming back on. I mentioned it to my midwife she wasnt concerened, i am eating better choices, drinking more water & ditched the wine as soon as i found out i was pregnant. Mention it to your midwife though just to double check 😀 x

I lost weight over my first pregnancy, not through trying, I just lost my appetite and had horrendous indigestion constantly - I am a larger lady though so nobody seemed that concerned at the time as they advise you don't put on too much. My son was considered small for gestational age when he was born though and I don't know if this contributed. Id ask your midwife.

I lost nearly a stone during the first trimester just because I never had an appetite/felt a bit sick 24/7.
I then PILED it on during 2nd and 3rd trimesters and ended up weighing nearly 3 stone more by the time I was due.
If anything is worrying you though I'd always ask your midwife Smile

I lost half a stone in first trimester due to sickness and didn’t really start gaining until 20 weeks. Were you overweight before pregnancy? The weight loss can be faster in people who had a higher BMI to start with

Just managed to speak to my midwife, who said not to worry at all. I was a size 12 before pregnancy on the bottom. She mentioned I’ll probably gain it towards the end of the pregnancy, which is reassuring!
She will check it again at 28 weeks. Thanks everyone xx

I was one of those, came out of hospital lighter than when I did my booking appointment but it was just due to my appetite disappearing

I lost 9 lbs from week 5 to week 20.

I'm 28 weeks now and have gained 10 lbs.

From what I've read first trimester weight loss is common and so is piling it on in the second/third trimester! Grin

Lyris · 30/04/2020 21:08

I'm 11 weeks and lost 5lbs in the past couple of weeks (but am a larger lady and actively trying to be more healthy and active now it's not just me)

Also... lack of booze definately having an impact!

What was your BMI before pregnancy? If it was the upper end of healthy or even over weight then I wouldn't worry about it.
If you were on the slim side before then I'd maybe start adding a healthy but calorific snack in every day like nuts, avocado, hummus etc.
