38 weeks - do you get internal exams?

Hi all!

FTM here and I’m going to my 38 week midwife appointment tomorrow (I’ll technically be 37+4 but all my appointments were messed up due to
Corona) I was just wondering what to expect? Will it be the same as all the other appointments or will there be an internal exam? I only ask because I’ve had countless braxton hicks for two weeks now (majority of them have to be timed because they’re so regular) and I wanted to know when do midwives actually start checking to see if you’re dilating or if your cervix is low/soft etc?

Any advice would be appreciated!

I didn't have any internal exams until I passed 40 weeks, and that was only because I agreed to have sweeps!

My youngest is now 8 - but from what I remember they never checked me in any of my PG - i had 3. The only time I was checked was when I was in labour.

Wow! Ok good to know! Not that I’m thrilled to have any internal exams but I’d just like to know if there’s any progression! Thanks everyone!

Didnt have one at my 38 week appointment and I've got my 40 week this friday and dont think I'll be having one then either. If I agree to a sweep It's at my 41 week appointment.

No not as standard, the first one I had was after my waters broke.

Only one I had was when they were deciding if I needed a c-section or not, which I did. But that was because I was in hospital with a few problems. I had section dead on 38 but no examination other than that Smile
