Food issues during pregnancy

Hi ladies,

I'm trimester 1 soon to be trimester 2 - first pregnancy and I am struggling with food!!

Currently vegetarian, weirdly can't stand the smell of the oven or frying pan, have to shut all doors when someone is cooking in the kitchen. Milk is not going down too well as that makes me feel sick too. Feel sick when I eat pretty much anything, tried making egg and ended up in the bin after one bite.. I am practically living on sandwiches/wraps/pita bread, apple, oranges, Fanta and water right now! (Worst constipation)

Have the worst nausea, keep some ginger biscuits nearby but am suffering from ruflux so when I lay down I just feel like I need to vomit! I take gaviscon chewable tablets, occasionally helps.

Horrid as I genuinely love cooking but can't stand being in the kitchen right now! Any advice please?!xx

I am right along with you. I generally love milk, but have been sick to the smell. I’ve learned to enjoy watermelon though, it’s hydrating and gives you strength especially if you’re getting sick often. I feel a few women I work with are having a hard time eating, because they are disgusted by most smell and sight. Most say it goes away by second trimester

For some reason I was able to cope if everything was drowned in vinegar... I'd suggest trying it but now that I'm past that stage it seems utterly disgusting! Fizzy water also really helped - maybe you can replace some of your Fanta intake at least? Raw carrots were also good, but they had to be organic because I could taste the difference. I'm not kidding Hmm

Totally get you, really went of food in the 1st tri - cooking it, looking at it, smelling it 🤢 I'd vom. Just eat and drink what your body can cope with, I started eating normally again at the beginning of the 2nd tri

I struggled to eat during my first trimester. My gp told me to just eat what I could when I could. I developed an aversion to water, anything with ginger in and teas/coffee (decaff). I lived off rice cakes and fruit for weeks and fizzy drinks and boiled water & honey. I was put on anti nausea medication in the end as I was losing quite a bit of weight and it was all having a negative impact on my mental health.
In my second trimester I started with awful acid reflux and was struggling to eat and drink, even sipping water was agony. Gaviscon & rennies were doing next to nothing, a few days ago I started on some medication to reduce the amount of acid in my stomach. The difference is huge! I get hungry now, I hadn't realised that I had permanently felt full for weeks, I can sleep better because I'm not dehydrated and I have more energy.
You don't have to suffer alone, there are things they can prescribe to help. I know some women are wary about medication but there are safe options out there that can improve your quality of life.

I felt the same for my first trimester and half of my second. Yoghurt was the only thing I could keep down at one point.

I still can't stomach the smell of curry.
