Sure start maternity grant

Was informed about the sure start maternity grant, was just wondering if anyone has had it before? And if your entitled to it with your second child. Just to clarify I never applied or received this with my first so this would be my first time applying for it. Would just like some information on it or to know whether I am even able to apply for it. Everything online says your can't have it with your second but doesn't state if that still applies if you've never had it before thanks.

I think you are still entitled to it but you don’t get as much for subsequent children unless it’s twins from what I’ve read

peppermintcapsules · 26/04/2020 20:27

There must be no other children in your family so no, you don't appear to be eligible for it.

Fingerscrossed11 · 26/04/2020 20:27

Not sure about not applying before and how that would work

Windyatthebeach · 26/04/2020 20:28

Afaik it's for your first dc only.
Unless pfb is over 16.
They obviously expect you to stash equipment for 16 years!!.

The site's pretty clear.

'If you already have children under 16
You may still be able to get a grant if either:

you’re expecting a multiple birth (such as twins)
the child you’re caring for is someone else’s (but not your partner’s) and the child was over 12 months old when the arrangement started'

eligibility

Sorry are you England? We have a different thing in Scotland with a pregnancy and baby element payment which you can receive whether first baby or not

starsdelight · 26/04/2020 20:31

Oh I'm really surprised by that. Seems abit ridiculous that you wouldn't be entitled to it when you haven't even had it before just because it's your second child.

Are you in scotland

starsdelight · 26/04/2020 20:37

popcorndiva · 26/04/2020 20:43

Isn't it for setting up for a baby? If you already have a child then you have all equipment already so don't need the grant.

Fingerscrossed11 · 26/04/2020 20:44

Seems different things in place in England it seems sorry. You could maybe give them a call and say you’ve not claimed this before and see if you’re eligible x

lc86 · 26/04/2020 20:50

My children are 10 and 7, and I never really planned on having another at the time so got rid of everything 🤦🏼‍♀️

Fifawidow · 26/04/2020 20:57

My kids are 10 got sure start 9 didnt get anything and almost 1 got it for him in scotland

NoRoomInBed · 26/04/2020 20:59

Yeah in Scotland you can get the grant no matter how many babies you have

quietheart · 26/04/2020 21:02

Used to get it for every child but the Torys scrapped it.

starsdelight · 26/04/2020 21:36

@popcorndiva yes the money is obviously for setting up for a baby but most people or atleast I didn't keep any of my baby things as i wasn't planning on having another so ofcourse that monkey would be useful now.

starsdelight · 26/04/2020 21:38

@Fingerscrossed11 yeah I'll probably just give them a ring anyway and just double check there's no harm in asking and if I can't then I can't but Thankyou everyone for the information

@starsdelight
You’re most welcome. Hopefully you should be given it since you’ve never received it before.
My youngest just now apart from baby still to be born is 6 and apart from a few outfits he didn’t wear and a few things I tried to hand knit Smile I haven’t kept anything. I think unless the babies are couple/ few years apart most people tend to not keep much of the baby items especially things like pram/bouncer/Moses basket etc etc
Good luck xx

starsdelight · 26/04/2020 23:08

@Fingerscrossed11 Thankyou and yeah I completely agree I mean my first is only 3 but I honesty just never planned on having another so for me I just got rid of pretty much everything as soon as it was no use to him anymore wish I hadn't now 😂 but all I can do is ask x
