Handy bits to get that aren't essential?

My in-laws want to get something significant (not just little clothing bits) but we already have big bits like a pram set, next 2 me crib and seat for the living room. Are there any items you'd recommend to get that aren't deemed as essential?

Video monitor? Baby carrier?

A rocking nursing chair, particularly if you plan on breastfeeding. I loved ours, DD is 15 months and it’s still in her room and at bedtime we have a cuddle and milk on it.

Or maybe a really nice sling? Again I found it invaluable with DD when she was a baby.

An activity mat/play gym? At first it’s just a safe comfy space to put them but when they start to interact with it they can provide hours of entertainment - you can hang other toys off it with links, some have lights/music, you can cover it with a sheet or foil blanket and put lights/music on for sensory play etc.

I would second the nursing chair. I have just bought one for this baby (20 weeks pregnant) and already enjoy sitting in it lol. I know people will say you can just feed in bed but I found that so uncomfortable with my last.

Does it need to be something suitable for a newborn?

If not, what about a cot or high chair?

Otherwise a changing table if you have the space? I know some people say they didn’t use theirs but we found the changing table invaluable.

A good quality sling would be my go to. Absolutely invaluable in the early days and we still use it occasionally with our toddler now!
And a playmat/baby gym. Great for popping them on the floor and having them entertained for a bit.
