HCG levels and bleeding - any advice please

I am preparing myself that this pregnancy isn’t going to work out. It is so sad, I’m really struggling.

I was (I think) 4+3 on Monday when I had back pain and pelvic pain, along with bright red bleeding. I had 3 very faint bfps at home the week before and when I went to the GP (he wanted to check for ectopic) the pregnancy test at the surgery was negative. Had a blood test yesterday and GP called me to say HCG was 75, which he didn’t think was that optimistic. Booked back in for another blood test to see if it’s going up/down on Thursday, should have result Friday morning. I still have very sore lower back but have had no more bleeding since Monday afternoon.

None of this sounds positive to me - I am so anxious not knowing either way. Google tells me HCG can vary a lot but 75 does seem very low and I’m struggling to get past this.

Any advice or thoughts?

The hcg won't mean anything at this point other than your pregnant as the hcg has to be doubling and i wouldn't worry about it being 75 at this point your still very early mine was only 82 at 5+3 days but am now 40weeks yesterday so you just need the number to be doubling and lots of people bleed during pregnancy but still have a healthy baby at the end xx I hope everything works out for you xx

Thank you for your reply @KHall84

I’ve just got up and I’ve actually had some light bleeding again, with a few clots. Different from a few days ago, this is darker red in colour. Unsure what to do?

I’m sorry you’re going through this.

There really is nothing you can do but wait for the results of the second blood test. I’ve been through exactly the same and the waiting is awful, I know. Wishing you luck Flowers

KHall84 · 22/04/2020 07:20

@Diorissimo1985 darker just means it can be old blood, also if its the time you would normally get your period then this can be why you bleed also xx

Diorissimo1985 · 22/04/2020 07:20

Thank you. I am in bits to be honest. Hard to carry on as normal, the waiting is awful.
I’m sorry you have experienced this too

If it's red or brown blood then that doesn't mean you're out. I bled at 8 weeks in this pregnancy and I'm 14 weeks now with a healthy baby confirmed at dating scan. I've also had an ectopic though so if you get blood that's thick and dark, it's described as 'prune juice' along with back or side pain then don't hang about for your gp, go to a&e.

Diorissimo1985 · 22/04/2020 09:47

Thanks @eventhecathasapenis
I’m so confused by Googling - the blood this morning was dark red but not black, and there were dark clots. It’s stopped now and nothing when wiping. I have dull back ache, not quite enough to take pain killers.

The GP didn’t think it was ectopic as he checked for temperature and felt my stomach. I can’t stand the not knowing Sad

Headache now too

KHall84 · 22/04/2020 09:51

@diorissimo1985 headaches are normal part of early pregnancy symptoms i suffered with them for the first 15 weeks of pregnancy so that's not to much to worry about cc

Diorissimo1985 · 22/04/2020 10:20

@khall84 thank you for chatting to me, really appreciate it. I’m so worried. If I’m miscarrying I just want it to be over, which sounds awful Sad

Sorry I noticed in your first reply you are full term now, that is wonderful - is it your first?

KHall84 · 22/04/2020 12:13

@Diorissimo1985 No its my 3rd technically but the 2nd was an ectopic xx

Diorissimo1985 · 22/04/2020 12:51

Sorry to hear about the ectopic - wishing you a positive birth

Hi OP

Just to echo a PP, HCGs mean diddly without the 48 hour comparison.

I have attached the report I got done when j have private HCGs at 7 weeks - we had a blighted ovum/MC last year and I’m such an anxious person I had to know.

As you can see hun your numbers are in range! Also it’s possible your dates are off and you’re earlier on than you thought.

Googling is not your friend right now! And ironically neither is MN because for every woman who said she was fine after bleeding is another who had a MC...

Try relax and be kind and look after yourself until you get your bloods done again!

I have everything crossed for you!! xx

HCG levels and bleeding - any advice please
kirinm · 22/04/2020 13:41

Was there a reason the GP wanted to test for an ectopic? Was it just the temperature? I've also had an ectopic and the bleeding was very distinctive. A very dark red.

I also had a huge amount of red bleeding, backaches and cramps with my daughter from 5-18w and no reason was ever determined for that but she's a very loud energetic 19mo now.

I know the wait is awful but you won't know anything until your results come through on Friday. I will keep fingers crossed for you.

Diorissimo1985 · 22/04/2020 14:05

Thank you so much.
@kirinm he said he wanted to check as I had complained of aching back, pelvic pain and bleeding (red blood). No pain in stomach though and I’ve had mild cramping today.

Just wanted to update the thread that I had more heavy bleeding, back pain and cramping today - saw GP who said I was miscarrying naturally and to rest at home. Still had my second blood test and will get results tomorrow, so that should confirm things. Feeling very sad but grateful for all the advice and support from MN over past few days.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you're doing okay. X

2020wish · 24/04/2020 08:22

I’m going through the same thing at present op. How are you today l. I’m in bits as I dunno what is going on and finding it hard to get anyone to see me to confirm if I’m miscarrying

Diorissimo1985 · 24/04/2020 09:04

Hi @2020wish - were you on the Christmas babies thread? I’ve had to hide the thread as I was getting upset looking at it.

I’m still bleeding today, the bleeding has turned to a really heavy type of period, feel exhausted and very weak. I would have been 5 weeks today.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this too, it’s so sad. How many weeks are you? Have you been signed off work? Try and rest as much as you can.
Hope you can speak or see a GP today if possible? Have your tried EPU? Flowers

@Diorissimo1985 yes I’m on that thread :) I am 6 weeks 2 days. My bleeding started yesterday morning and has continued til this morning. Bright red and few small clots this morning. It’s not enough to soak a pad so the maternity unit and early pregnancy unit won’t see me at all. I’ve rang 4 times . My boobs are no longer tender from yesterday but having Period cramps and think I might have a uti also. And feel nauseated and sick from today which could be just stress related . How did ur bleeding start and when ? And how has it progressed x

Diorissimo1985 · 24/04/2020 13:46

Flowers @2020wish
For me, bleeding started with light red spotting Monday afternoon, with back ache getting quite bad. Saw GP and was booked in for blood test next day as they wanted to check HCG levels.
No bleeding Tuesday but then Weds had red spotting again, not enough to soak a pad. Then Thursday morning I woke up with period-like bleeding with clots and awful back ache. Went to GP following phone consultation as they were worried about ectopic. Bled all day yesterday and it’s continuing today, feeling very dizzy and weak.
Also had bloods done again yesterday and GP called today to say HCG levels have gone down so I have miscarried. Just have to wait it out at home Sad

I am sorry OP. Hugs x

2020wish · 24/04/2020 15:18

So sorry @Diorissimo1985 :( I cant even get anyone to check my hcg levels so I know if they have gone down and can deal
With it mentally and prepare myself :( x

Diorissimo1985 · 24/04/2020 15:52

@2020wish that is so frustrating - is it Covid-related or do they just not offer appointments for what you’re describing? I’m so sorry
