Can anyone help with pronunciation of this name...

....Nathaniel?

I always thought it was Nath at the beginning to rhyme with Math.

But DH has planted seeds of doubt saying it might be N-AE-th (if that makes sense), i.e. the same sound as Nathan?

And does anyone like it?!! Would shorten to Nate I think.

I always thought it was the way you say it. Don't ask me why I remember this, but one of the characters in War of the Worlds is called Nathaniel and its pronounced that way on the cd! I'm singing it now!

Nath an yul

(nath as in math)

Caz I had a boy in my class in grade 6 called Nathaniel - your pronounciation - we called him Nat.

MaureenMLove · 14/09/2007 21:50

Oh and yes, I like it a lot!

MerlinsBeard · 14/09/2007 21:50

You (and Maureen) are right.

Sorry, no, not a favourite of mine.

nell12 · 14/09/2007 21:51

Nath to rhyme with math

charlieandlola · 14/09/2007 21:51

ds is nathaniel ( nate), and we pronounce is Nath as in Math, not Naeth as is Nathan. Lovely name, imho

pinkbubble · 14/09/2007 21:52

I would pronounce it as Ner thanial IYSWIM

tasja · 14/09/2007 21:53

THANK YOU!!

Pronunciation problems probably not helped by my Scottish accent hee hee!

charlieandlola I like it too! have you had good reactions to ds being called that? People keep making funny faces when I mention it, but I just keep coming back to it.

Lovely name. Nat is a cool abreviation imho. Ds has twin friends called Nat and Joe. They're lovely lads

N-AE-TH- aniel is the american pronunciation I think. I remember from that TV show " six feet under"
I would think your pronunciation of the name would be correct here in the UK.
Like Megan in Australia is Mee-gan - took me ages to pronounce that correctly when I lived there.
