Water Birth

I'm expecting #2 and would love a water birth this time if possible.

If you've had one; what did you wear?

Naked? Bikini top? T-shirt?

I've got quite a large bust and it's uncomfortable to wear no bra at the moment, but might not be an issue in water.

Any other tips for water births? I love the idea but don't know anyone that's actually had one.

I wore a tankini top no bottoms first time round I would definitely recommend getting two though so if you get out for a bit you have a dry warm one to put on as sometimes if its slowing laboyr down they ask you to get out for a bit x

Mine was unplanned with my 2nd, i got in the pool in just the tshirt i was wearing. I loved it, had been 4cm on arriving at hospital at around 4am (ish) contractions were strong and painful, i was using g+a. As soon as i got in the pool, i managed two or three contractions without the gas. Really effective for me. My water broke in the pool and i had to get out as there was some blood mixed with it and my little man arrived what felt like minutes later. Would highly recommend and am hoping for another one myself this time around.

Nothing! I was rather late getting to hospital and literally jumped into the pool to push :) I had packed a bikini top but there was no time!
Loved my water birth, way easier than my first birth on dry land.

I was in the pool for a while, would have stayed in and given birth in there but I was physically exhausted after 4 days and nights of contractions so my midwife recommended a pethadine injection so I could rest.
I loved the pool though, really helped. I wore a tankini, had top and bottoms on the whole time. I wanted to remain as covered up as possible throughout my labour, so I did.

Three water births here! Thoroughly recommend them! Wore bikini top for all three, obvs nothing below.

I had a workout type top from Matalan and bikini bottoms with tie sides but didn’t bother with the bottoms in the end. Felt more covered than a bikini but didn’t flap about or get in my way x

Loved my water birth, I wore a sports bra but was in then out so took it off as it was wet. Then Got back in towards the end with nothing on but didn't even think about it!

paperandfireworks · 18/04/2020 23:02

I had never considered wearing anything and turned up without anything to wear, midwife seemed somewhat alarmedConfused

She honestly seemed bewildered, which inturn made me (briefly) awkward and embarrassed.

Gerdticker · 18/04/2020 23:07

Nothing :)

My labour happened rather fast - I think I would have worn a bra if I’d been less advanced when I got in the pool, and had a moment to think about it..But the contractions were so strong I didn’t care one bit, and nobody else seemed to either!

mrsed1987 · 18/04/2020 23:11

Nothing, was completely unplanned and when i said to the midwives do i just take every thing off i dont even think i listened to the answer i just got in!

Whats a bit of boob when they are seeing worse!

LunaHardy · 18/04/2020 23:24

Had a water birth with my second, wore a bikini top. Thoroughly recommend. Totally different experience than with my ds 12 years ago where I didn't feel at all in control. Good luck!

gossipgirl28 · 19/04/2020 01:00

I had a water birth with my first. Got in completely naked. Plan on doing the same with baby number 2 in a few months.
Don't like the thought of wearing wet clothing if that makes sense x

ElegantPeacock · 19/04/2020 09:16

Hi. I had... Half a water birth, if that's possible. I managed hours in the pool but I was so exhausted and it got to the point the pain did get a lot more heightened. Loved every minute of it though. I just wore a vest top.

MichelleOR84 · 19/04/2020 13:51

I wore a bikini but when you are in that much pain you might not really care .

In the end , I wasn’t able to give birth in the water due to complications and had to get out and finish my labour in a bed. I ended up naked towards the end of my labour because I had puked all over myself , tried changing, was in too much pain to put clothes back on and ended up naked lol . I’m a pretty conservative person when it comes to nudity too 🤷‍♀️

Just as a heads up, my trust has now said no second stage of labour in the pool, only first stage, due to risk of covid transmission from contaminated water (blood and poo) to baby and/or midwife.
