Should I be worried? Cervical length

Had my 12 week scan at the end of march which dated me at almost 13 weeks- I'm high risk with increased risk of cervical incompetency but this is my first pregnancy so it's an unknown risk. My cervix at this scan only measured 25.9mm but 'appeared closed'. They ran the result past the consultant who agreed it was fine and for me to be followed up at 16 weeks (which is now 17 weeks with my revised dates). I have a scan a week today.

I actually didn't see exactly what my cervical length was until just now when I turned my scan report over Blush I just went with them saying it was fine. However, I've got a sort of heavy feeling like when a tampon isn't in far enough so I did some research and it seems my cervical length is actually quite short, borderline concerning. Should I contact someone do you think, or wait til Friday? Really worried about this now Confused

If the sonography checked with the consultant and they were happy enough then what would happen if you called them?

I know it's worrying - everything about pregnancy and then parenting is.

But what are you calling to say? "I know the consultant said it was fine but I've read on google that it might be borderline?"

Easier said, I know.

It's more that I'm concerned they've left it 4-5 weeks without review, and the feeling of heaviness. But you're probably right, it won't achieve anything.

If you are feeling the heaviness I think it’s still worth it to call the hospital and see explain the situation, maybe they can bring your appointment forward. I think that you have the right reasons to be worried with that cervical lenght.

Hello. I also have a short cervix. At this point I don’t think you need to worry too much, you’re in the consultants list now and being scanned. I was scanned every 3-4 weeks until week 28 I think, and put on progesterone (Although there are also other options) from week 16/17 until I gave birth. I remember feeling heavy all through my pregnancy too. By all means, call for reassurance though, that’s what they are there for.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 18/04/2020 08:01

Why do you say you’re high risk? Probably depends on that a little bit. Are you on any treatment?

25.9 at 13 weeks is a little on the short side but it can be very difficult to measure correctly at that time, so may actually be fine. But if you are worried that your symptoms have changed, you should call the clinic - I’d say a high risk patient now with symptoms should be seen for a repeat cervical length pretty quickly. When you call - state it that way, the previous length youve seen on your report matters less than the fact that you are high risk with a change in symptoms.

That said - it is pretty common to get a heavy feeling and most likely everything is fine! So do get it checked out but don’t panic yourself too much.

Go back and ask to see someone or do you have a triage unit ?
It’s better to go and get checked than not to with your symptoms as things can change quickly in pregnancy
Good luck x

Thanks for all your replies, I'm going to ring triage this morning.
@TenThousandSpoons0 I'm considered high risk for pre term labour and late miscarriage as I have a uterine abnormality called uterus didelphys which means I have double everything, the risk being that the womb the baby is in might not stretch enough which I assume could lead to the cervix starting to open. I'm likely to have a premature baby by caesarean it's just a question of how premature!

I think you are absolutely doing the right thing and I hope it all
Goes well xx

Good luck today, hope all is well. Would ask them to arrange to recheck your cervical length with a scan (they should do that automatically but you never know). If genuinely 26mm and esp if

esmerelda1988 · 18/04/2020 11:31

Cervix still closed, they didn't measure it but have given me progesterone pessaries given I'm not due for another scan til Friday. Thank you all for your advice and support!
