Used Mattress

Someone has leant us a Crib to use for the start but I am worried because I know it has been used a few times before. It's an old ikea one so I don't think I can get a new mattress for it unless I shell out to have one specially made which I can't afford to do right now. I don't think we will use the crib too often however - I have a snuggle nest that I can put in the bed coming so plan to use that mainly.

Do you think this crib is safe to use? Or am I safer just leaving it be just in case. The mattress isn't damaged in anyway it's just old but I don't want to take any risks.

Stefka, I shouldn't think there'll be a problem with it, especially if its more for naps that regular sleeping. If it were me I'd give it a good spray with some antibacterial stuff all over then let it dry and air out for a couple of days. If you're still concerned you could always use those disposable change mats under the sheet (but that would be my OCD kicking in I think )

I worry about risks too but if it is just for naps I think it will be fine, I have just bought a 2nd hand carrycot for my pushchair and I won't be replacing the mattress in that as it will only be used for naps. Mine has only been used a few times and is a plastic coated one too so a good disinfect and a few days airing should be enough. Baby will be sleeping in the cot at night (which I will be getting a new mattress for).

Bumping this because I'm interested to know what others think on this too...

I doubt Ikea sizes have changed much but it 'll be fine with an airing anyway.

Would you be interested in a Mothercare pram/crib mattress? We bought all new for each of our three children and they were only used for a few months.

I will check Ikea - it's a crib they don't make anymore though rather than one of their cots. I will need to go and measure the mattress to see what size it is.

Personally I wouldn't use it, but I am quite cautious. If you don't have much cash right now, just keep the baby in your bed.
