Upper rib pain

Hi

Has anyone else experienced upper rib pain literally just below my right breast?

It's more at night when I sleep. I'm 24 weeks. No protein in urine and blood pressure normal as I googled preeclampsia. So don't no if that now rules that out?

I had this last night it was horrific , it’s only just gone now over 12 hours later . I gulped some milk and it seemed to help as my friend said it would be heartburn . Hope you get some relief soon, it’s awful. I’m 20 weeks

Kennylou12 · 13/04/2020 10:36

I had this on and off and turned out it was gallbladder inflammation from eating fatty food. Since I have cut it out have not had the pain since :)

clo1992 · 13/04/2020 16:04

I don't think mines heartburn I'm not entirely sure if it's the actual rib that hurts or the muscle. It seems to be pretty persistent today but very much dependent on my posture and position to. Really odd.
I'm hoping it's nothing to worry about to much and just a pregnancy achey pain x

Mines come back again today too and seems ok until I move. Please let me know if you find out what it is !

I've had this quite badly of late, under both breasts. It's like the muscle there is really sore and tender. It hurts to lay down but improves when I'm moving around. I initially attributed it to wearing an underwired bra which had gotten too tight gradually without me noticing but I've seen a few people have been experiencing it. I've been really worrying about it and annoyingly forgot to asked the midwife about it last week. I'm 29 weeks tomorrow. Sorry I don't have anything useful to add but perhaps this sounds similar to what you have been experiencing?

I had this with my last pregnancy from around 20 weeks. Never found a solution but it was the most painful thing ever. For me swimming eased it somewhat but could hardly do anything from 30 weeks on. Got some relief when baby dropped around 36 weeks After baby was born (at 37+6) it went away but left me numb in that area so my doctor assumes it was nerve damage.

Currently 19 weeks and still fairly numb so hoping I’ll skip the pain this time. Definitely worth noting though that my pain was on the left side of my ribs and doctors always said if it was on my right to let them know because that can be a liver issue when you’re pregnant.

Hoping it gets better for you x

clo1992 · 13/04/2020 20:06

It's so weird. Iv a feeling it's a bit of a trapped nerve but it does worry me because it's on my right hand side.
I have a midwife appointment on Wednesday so I'll mention it to her then. X

I had it from about 8 weeks until I gave birth. It would come & go but I'd say it hurt about 75% of the time. Hot water bottle is the only thing that would help! There's something called costochondritis which you can get in pregnancy which I think might be what I had. I mentioned it at every midwife appointment and she couldn't have been any less interested though. Sometimes it was absolute agony!

Toz13 · 15/04/2020 21:49

I literally suffer from the exact same thing. It's a dull hot sensation pain I feel under my right breast when I lay down and sleep. Only thing to relieve is to stretch it out. My skin in that area is now numb to touch. I feel for you!

2020firsttimemum · 15/04/2020 22:04

Currently 29 weeks and have had this for probably about 10 weeks now. Constant pain in my right ribs which gets worse throughout the day and seems okay in the morning. Midwife said it's just where everything is moving and not a lot you can do! Sometimes feels like pins and needles in your ribs?

I'm only 5'2 as well so not a lot of room for him in there!

mineofuselessinformation · 15/04/2020 22:13

If your baby is still head up (not a problem at this stage of your pregnancy) it may well be because of it.
Unfortunately, the baby's head may well be pressing against your ribs, which can be painful,
Give your midwife a ring and ask them.

clo1992 · 16/04/2020 09:33

So my rib pain went for two days and last night it started hurting again. It's definitely got a lot to do with posture as sitting over a desk on my computer sets it off.
Midwife said it's baby moving everything up. I'm only quite small and my waist has always been tiny so I guess my body's going to suffer a bit to accommodate a watermelon 🍉 🙊

@clo1992 - having the same problem, so thanks for starting this thread so we can all see we're not the only ones! Hope you feel reassured too.

I'm fairly petite, just less than 5'4, and have a very small torso - 30/32" back size and little shoulders etc, and I think this is a common link between a few of us! There just doesn't seem to be enough room for everything being squished upwards...

@Hannah9176 - hot water bottle sounds like a good plan! x

GaaaaarlicBread · 16/04/2020 12:05

I’ve been on the phone to my GP this morning as the cramp and aches hadn’t gone, I described my symptoms to him and he’s said it sounds like a classic UTI in pregnancy with no other symptoms of burning etc . I was so surprised because of where the pain is . He’s prescribed antibiotics over the phone so I need to go get them later but just thought I’d update you all on what mine is apparently . He also said the smaller you are the worse cramps you’ll get in general with shifting organs etc so I think you all have a good point about the majority of us being shorter and more petit ! He told me not to worry about any pains unless it takes my breath away accompanied by bleeding so that’s reassuring !

clo1992 · 16/04/2020 13:46

@GaaaaarlicBread yes that's an odd pain area for uti pain.
It's a shame they won't do a uti dip stick test as I had one done yesterday and no signs of infection.

I don't no if your wee is a funny colour or anything?

OP posts:
GaaaaarlicBread · 16/04/2020 14:43

No, I’m peeing a lot but no smell or anything ! So weird

Isadora2007 · 16/04/2020 14:44

No UTI I’ve ever heard of causes rib pain. Google costochondritis and see if that sounds similar?

GaaaaarlicBread · 16/04/2020 17:56

I rang the dr back and he said my urine sample I did at my last midwife appointment showed signs of infection but I was never treated for it, which explains why I’ve been a bit off it. Took a sample down for them (stood outside), and yep I have an infection still. So the pains I’ve got are unrelated to the other pain I had the other day !

dottydally · 16/04/2020 18:02

My DS is 5 months old now but I suffered with awful rib pain from about 28/30 weeks onwards. He was head down the entire time but his bum under my ribs caused lots of pain. It started round the front and by 36/38 weeks spread round my back too. Saw the physio at the time who said there wasn't a huge amount they could do but suggested paracetamol and a hot wheat bag on my ribs (but not too hot on your front as it'll be next to baby).

If it's any help, it went instantly when he was born and I've not had any lasting pain!
