Aspirin- when did they tell you to start taking it?

That really. Everything I've read says from 12 weeks, if you fit a certain criteria, but interested to know what people were told and when they started?

Hi OP,

Started taking it at 12 weeks (advice from pharmacist and midwife).

Need to take it in the evening after food. It has to be dissolved in a glass of water too.

carnaval · 10/04/2020 13:26

Hi OP,
I started at 12 and stopped at 36.

ByAppointmentTo · 10/04/2020 13:34

I was told to start as soon as I got a positive pregnancy test.

Elouera · 10/04/2020 13:45

@ByAppointmentTo- Can I ask what your risk factors were?

I was told to take it from a positive pregnancy test to 36 weeks, due to my previous miscarriages.

ByAppointmentTo · 10/04/2020 13:52

@Elouera I had pre-eclampsia with my first successful pregnancy. I'd also had several pregnancy losses and PCOS.

Kezmum14 · 10/04/2020 15:11

I was told to start taking 75ml from 12 weeks then at 16 weeks they put the dose up to 159ml. I’ve been told to take it after food in the morning. I didn’t even realise they were dissolvable until I was 24 weeks 🙈 I’ve just been taking them with my morning drink! 😬

Wudgy · 10/04/2020 20:17

Started at 12weeks, 75mg,Mine definitely are not dissolveable just normal and was not advised I had to take at any particular time of day?!!

SoonToBeMrs91 · 10/04/2020 20:28

I've been told to start taking as soon as I get positive test, had 3 previous early miscarriages. Right now I'm at 15 weeks and everything is going great.

Elouera · 10/04/2020 20:44

Thanks everyone. I'm only 5 weeks with IVF pregnancy (early 40's and previous MC's) and hadn't heard/read of anyone else starting it so soon.
Reassuring to know others did indeed start early with no ill effects.

I started at positive pregnancy test advise as 'wouldn't hurt so worth a shot' by consultant due to 3 precious miscarriages and took until 36 weeks - that was with my daughter and I'm now 25 weeks pregnant and doing the same again (75mg) just the ones from the pound shop! X

Igottastartthinkingbee · 11/04/2020 08:40

As soon as possible (severe PE in previous pregnancy). Stopped taking at 36 weeks.

fool11 · 11/04/2020 09:35

I started at 8w , requested by a consultant, ivf baby (I’m 45). Currently 24w pregnant.

Tushka9 · 11/04/2020 10:05

Hello ladies, I’m just 5 weeks but a bit paranoid because of previous MMC (7 weeks). Since I’ve never taken any blood tests while pregnant, I wouldn’t know of any blood clotting risks.
So what if I start taking aspirin daily just as a precaution, do you think it is safe?

Littlegoth · 11/04/2020 10:49

I have a blood clotting disorder which was diagnosed after my third miscarriage. My dose is 150 mg every night which I had to start taking before conception and will need to continue after pregnancy as a preventative measure against clotting events. They don’t know why but studies have shown that aspirin is more effective when taken at night, which is why this is now the medical advice.

Elouera · 11/04/2020 12:14

@Littlegoth- I'll take mine at night going forward, thanks.

tushka call your midwife or gp for advise. It’s commonly used for all kinds of conditions but none (as far as I know!) are experts so please get advice before doing anything.

Hannah1990x · 11/04/2020 20:01

I've taken them since before conception with both pregnancies. 75mg with my daughter due to losses and family history of pre eclampsia then double that with this baby as I did end up getting pre eclampsia with my first.

I've had 3 losses, the only babies I've carried successfully (my daughter and this baby) are ones where I've taken aspirin (I had one loss between my daughter and this baby where I wasn't taking it). It's been a miracle for me.

Fourfoot · 12/04/2020 14:11

I'm 17+2 today. My risk factors are my age (38) BMI and first pregnancy. I was told my my midwife to stay taking aspirin at 16 weeks.

MrsEG · 12/04/2020 14:19

Aspirin use depends entirely as to why you need it. I took it from 8 weeks with a twin pregnancy - I was not allowed to take it earlier than that as my consultant advised it could affect implantation. Please do consult with a doctor and see what they advise based on your pregnancy. I did then take it from 8 weeks to 36 weeks with no issues at all. And congratulations!

Elouera · 12/04/2020 14:30

MrsEG@- I HAVE been prescribed aspirin and I'm 5 weeks. I didn't just start taking it on a whim! I was concerned because the IVF clinic is now shut, and they only have a skeleton of staff answering emails. They implanted 2 embryos, so this too might be a twin pregnancy- yet you were told from 8 weeks.

I'm well aware that there are differing criteria for each person, but until this thread, had not read of anyone else taking it prior to 12 weeks.
