Hey
Just wondering how far on you were before you started wearing maternity clothes?
Currently 7 weeks but feeling round in the tummy and clothes seem too tight! Unsure if it's too soon to be buying maternity clothes and if I should just buy something the next size up?

I started at around 16ish weeks. Maternity clothes will always make your tummy look pregnant as they are designed for the bump so if it's a secret maybe get some maternity jeans/leggings and smock tips/dresses to tie you over a couple of weeks :) Your tummy will be so bloated in those early days, you're not doing anything wrong it's just those pesky hormones! Maybe sure you're comfortable whatever you wear :)

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 10/04/2020 15:26

I think I really needed pregnancy trousers from around 20 weeks to be more comfortable, but I also. I also had a lot of Snag thights that were good enough for before and during pregnancy- I can recommend as they are usually a very good fit but also have a good stretch for the growing bump. Most of my tops are tunics anyways, so had enough space, but from 20/25 weeks I started wearing some proper maternity ones too.

I started wearing maternity clothes at around 20 weeks with my first. I am currently 9 weeks pregnant with my second and luckily don't need to get them out yet! Do whatever makes you feel comfy. Buy them now and at least you'll have them for your whole pregnancy x

MsChatterbox · 10/04/2020 16:37

I started wearing maternity trousers really early because I was so bloated. Tops I've never had any special maternity tops apart from a couple of vests and have just sized up!

Lilice · 10/04/2020 16:44

I started at 12 weeks but this is my third. I think I was around 16 weeks with my first

Cherryrainbow · 10/04/2020 17:01

I started this week about 15/16 weeks cos I got some nice dresses and loose tops from online. I ordered from boohoo because they were reasonably priced and surprisingly good quality x

Mumtoone39 · 10/04/2020 17:08

Around 20 weeks ( baby 2), now 26weeks - still wearing some non maternity clothes depending on the fit.

Superscientist · 10/04/2020 17:29

I'm usually between 2 dress sizes and my wardrobe is a mix of the two sizes. At about 10 weeks the lower of the two sizes were a bit too snug to wear. I'm now 21 weeks and only just starting to need maternity trousers although I'm mostly in my own clothes my choice is reduced depending on cut and fit of each item.

USER18888 · 10/04/2020 18:37

I think it's probably more I need to up a clothes size then by the sounds of it, I'm sure I wont bounce into my original size anyway after the birth! Wink

The first trimester can be really bad for bloating, and clothes a size up feel so much better!

N12345625 · 10/04/2020 19:05

I had to buy a few clothes the size up after giving birth... So come to think of it, I could have just bought some when my clothes were getting tight for me in the first trimester. Although I am still wearing some of them 9 months after giving birth 😩😩😩

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/04/2020 19:12

I just bought bigger jeans for a while to be comfy. My tops were all fine.

I’ve just bought some maternity clothes and I’m 17 weeks tomorrow. I don’t need to wear them yet but I didn’t want to need them and have to wait ages for delivery. The maternity trousers and jeans look ridiculous as they have loads of space for a bump I barely have yet. I’m showing but not enough for the trousers and jeans. Leggings are fine for now.

Colouringinbook · 10/04/2020 19:50

First trimester bloat is awful. Used to be desperate to get into my car at the end of the day so I could undo trouser button or skirt zip! Smock type things are your friend, think I was in maternity stuff by 20 weeks. Can't wait to get out all that stretchy lycra again!

MichelleOR84 · 10/04/2020 20:10

At 12 weeks I bought several jumpers one size up and a pair of jeans one size up . The jeans lasted me until 20 weeks pregnant and the tops lasted me until about 24 or 25 weeks.

I was able to use those clothes again after the baby was born as it took a few months to fit into my old clothes.

I switched mostly to maternity clothing by 20 weeks , especially bottoms . I put a lot of weight on in the begging though 😬.

1990shopefulftm · 10/04/2020 20:42

Honestly, I m 11 weeks and put maternity clothes on a couple of weeks ago, I was bloated a lot since I found out so i got them because it's more comfortable as my normal clothes just don't fit.

Blindingpeaky · 10/04/2020 21:35

I got some maternity jeans at 11 weeks. I was horribly bloated and my normal trousers just were too tight by the afternoon.

London91 · 11/04/2020 08:44

I'm 20 weeks and not in maternity clothes. I'm living in leggings right now but don't feel like I have enough of a bump to break out the maternity gear just yet. This is my first and I'm generally a size 14 at the moment.

Catlover10 · 11/04/2020 09:07

I’m 30 weeks and although I’ve technically
needed to be in maternity since about 22 weeks, I haven’t actually bought any specific maternity clothes. I am just making do with baggy joggers and leggings and baggy tops I had anyway or stretchy clothes that go over or under the bump. I can’t really afford to buy a load of new clothes and am hoping my old tighter clothes will fit me eventually again so these kind of things will have to do for now and the couple of months after the birth...especially when I’m barely leaving the house at the moment

Margo34 · 11/04/2020 13:26

What are the sizings like for online retailers like Boohoo and Asos? I've never bought clothes online and needed to start looking! 16 weeks and bump is beginning to grow although I can still fit into my regular jeans at the mo, although tmy usual leggings and dresses a little more comfy right now! I am usually a size 10 in Dorothy Perkins for example - what size would that be in a maternity clothes on boohoo or asos?

kittykat7210 · 11/04/2020 13:36

I had maternity work trousers from 10 weeks (had to be a certain style and it was uncomfortable on my bump) but other than that I’ve not bought any maternity clothes at all, no need for them (33 weeks) I just wear normal leggings in a size up and stretch tees also in a size up, or any slightly more floaty tops in correct size.

Only purchase you might want to make is maternity jeans, I did debate getting some but I couldn’t justify the £40+ for a few months of jeans, so primark leggings it was 😂

1990shopefulftm · 11/04/2020 13:44

@Margo34 I'm a size 8 and got size 8 boohoo maternity clothes and although I'm 11 weeks so some of it is a bit big, i think it ll fit well later on. the leggings are really cheap

HarrietM87 · 11/04/2020 13:49

@Margo34 you’re supposed to take the same size in maternity clothes as normal clothes but I put on weight everywhere so went up a size - so size 10 pre-pregnancy and size 12 mat clothes.

I didn’t start wearing them until about 24 weeks with my first baby. I’m 10 weeks with my second and weirdly haven’t had much bloating this time round and still in my normal clothes. I was expecting to show earlier second time but it hasn’t happened yet.

kittykat7210 · 11/04/2020 13:59

@Margo34

I find ASOS maternity massive, I did buy maternity last time but found I barely ever wore it, i went for size 6 and it was a bit big even at the end.

Normal size 10 clothes fit me (I started an 8-10) as long as they aren’t super tight style/Unforgiving fabric or high waisted

Ang3113 · 11/04/2020 14:01

I bought some maternity jeans by about 10 weeks as I was just so uncomfortable due to bloating. Next and asos have nice things I've found.

Margo34 · 11/04/2020 16:45

👍 Good to know thanks all. Sorry for jumping on your post as well OP @USER18888
