20 Week scan

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. This is my first baby and I had a scan around 17weeks just for a check up and everything was growing fine. This was just before lockdown and I’m due next week for my 20 week scan.

I’m not too comfortable with whats going on right now. Is it urgent that I go for this scan? I’m low risk.

Thanks guys

Yes. The 20 week scan is to check for specific anomalies. They asses the heart, brain and spine amongst other things in detail. They would not have done that at the previous scan.

I had mine 2 weeks ago. I really would urge you to go, they do check on every organ and heart chambers, spine, placenta etc. In my experience the hospital has felt safe, clean and quiet if that helps to reassure you.

I would say that the 20 week scan is the most important scan. It is the longest and the sonographer takes measurements in order to check for birth defects.

If you are very anxious about it I would give your midwife a call. But I would be hesitant to miss that specific scan.

Yes, it's the most important as it checks all the babies organs, limbs, arteries etc. Mine also showed that I have a low lying placenta which needs to be rechecked at 32 weeks.

I too had a 17 week scan and, although it was pretty thorough, it wasn't as much so as the nhs 20 week scan.

The anomaly scan is between 18 and 21 weeks and they literally check everything! There are certain things that wouldn't be picked up any earlier than 18 weeks which is why they don't do it sooner.

Of all the scans/appointments there are, this is the last one I would want to miss.
