Covid-19 in first trimester - worried about birth defects

It's possible DH and I had Covid-19 a couple of weeks ago although if so symptoms were very mild and so more likely to have been a different virus (albeit not one I've experienced before).

If we did have it, it was a critical period of development, especially for heart. I'm really worried about the implications of this given that transmission from mum to fetus is now thought to be probable, although effects on early development are of course unknown because nobody in this position would have given birth yet or likely even reached anomaly scan stage.

Is anyone in same position? I don't know what to do really. I know some viruses are more transmissible later on but with most the most damage seems to be done very early (like with rubella and CMV)

There are risks if you have a fever in early pregnancy, which is a symptom of covid-19.
That is something to bear in mind, but it will not impact all fetuses. If you’re worried speak to your midwife, and hopefully you can get some extra reassurances during scans xxx

I had all the symptoms early Feb, in fact I was ill when I found out I was pregnant (around 4/5 weeks). It does worry me but my 12 week scan was fine, just waiting for my 20 week scan and going for a private scan tomorrow for some extra reassurance. I suppose there is no evidence that COVID causes birth defects or that it’s any different from any other virus in pregnancy but it doesn’t stop that niggle at the back of your mind.

Thanks so much & so good to hear your 12 week scan went well, congratulations. Good idea to get the extra reassurance scan, all the best for that tomorrow. Is this your 3rd baby? It’s my 3rd too. Take care x

Hi @SophiaConfetti,

I just wondered how things were going for you? I really hope you and your baby are well. I would love to hear from you as I am 9 weeks pregnant and have just tested positive for COVID. I’m really concerned about how it might affect the baby. My doctor and midwife don’t seem to be too concerned but have mentioned me potentially having to take anticoagulants.

I have a raised temperature but not a fever (36.8-37.3°C) and feel exhausted. So far, I don’t have any other symptoms.

I would really appreciate hearing some updates on how you are all getting on. We still haven’t announced my pregnancy as it’s early days so I’m finding coping with this quite difficult.

Thank you

Hi curious to see how everything turned out with your baby ? I also had COVID very early in my pregnancy .

3isthemagicnumber3 · 12/03/2021 20:29

Just to update that my baby girl is now 5 months old and perfectly healthy and perfect in every way, after my early pregnancy COVID and subsequent worrying. I hope everyone else has positive outcomes too.

Hi there ladies
Congratulations all of you on your gorgeous babies.
I had COVID a week or so ago and have just found out I’m pregnant - 5/6 weeks….
Please please please can you let me know you all have healthy babies now and the worry you had when you were pregnant (same as I have now) didnt result in any birth defects? I am beyond worried and am genuinely crying all the time. I have never posted on here before! Thank you so much x
