Hi just had my 12 week scan and just wondering if it is safe to go on a bike ride with the family on some places I read it’s ok and some places I read it’s not just wanting to know people personal views x

You'd need to ask your midwife. My midwife told me I couldn't run or cycle, except on a static bike (or a spinning class) due to the risk of falling (cycling) or jostling/jerking the baby (running).

Generally the advice is that if you are well and low risk then by all means continue with anything you did as normal before you were pregnant. I couldn’t do anything other than a bit of walking in the first trimester as any exertion made me throw up. I don’t think the risks of falling/jostling are really that valid - it’s more what is comfortable for you physically as well as in terms of your own personal pregnancy risks, so yes, if you have concerns then speak to your midwife.

I was told not to cycle, ski or do any high impact sports after 12 weeks. Before 12 weeks is considered fine as baby is well protected .

I love running , walking and I love hiking ( easy trails when pregnant) . Running does get harder as pregnancy progresses though 😝! I don’t do yoga but it was recommended by my midwife . I think I’ll try it though . I’m currently pregnant with baby number 2.

My sister cycled to work until she was in her third trimester though . She couldn’t afford not to . I know lots of people who went on easy, gentle bike rides while pregnant and it looked pretty harmless.

I'm 25 weeks and go on my bike a couple of times a week. Yes there's a risk of falling, but considering I've only fallen off my bike twice in 10 years (both times my fault for lack of concentration) it's a risk I feel comfortable taking.

I found this article/personal story to be really helpful: www.cyclinguk.org/blog/victoria-hazael/cycling-bump-it-safe-to-ride-whilst-pregnant

I think everyone is quite twitchy and second-guessing themselves anyway with current restrictions!
