Worried in leaking amnio and felt midwife wasn’t listening

Hi ladies

25 weeks pregnant with first baby so all is new to me. Also MC last year so slightly more paranoid.

I'm a little concerned I may be leaking amniotic fluids. I felt some trickles this morning but Tbf I do have a leaky bladder and damp underwear is not uncommon.

An hour ago I fully emptied my bladder, put on some clean pants and lay on my side for an hour not moving. I checked my underwear and there are wet patches visible and it doesn't smell of urine. I have no pain and no coloured discharge. It’s like someone poured small amounts of water in my pants.

Spoke to my hospital assessment unit and the midwife (I think she was a MW) said it could be thrush or a bladder infection as I have low lying pressure and the liquid could be discharge. She Told me to wear a pad for a bit and call back if it's continuing.

This Doesn't look anything like any discharge I have had in my life and I have had enough thrush and bladder infections to know what they feel like. Nor do I have any other of their symptoms. I don’t like to second guess medical professionals but for the first time I don’t feel I was 100% listened to or taken seriously, however I appreciate first time mothers worry a lot unnecessarily.

Any advice/input/similar situations would be greatly appreciated!

Don’t take chances. She told you to ring back so do so. Tell them you were asked to ring back if it continues and that it has. Don’t take chances or hesitate when it comes to things like this . Better safe than sorry

Just call them back and say youre still getting the fluid and you'd feel much better if you could go in and get tested for it. Theyll make you sit on a big pad on the bed for 45 minutes and then test the fluid themselves x

It could be watery discharge. Although you may not have had it before, it is possible.

They don't want anyone going into hospital unnecessarily at the moment.

Take her advice, pop on a pad, go about your normal activities and monitor it. If it carries on then call back and go in.

Hello amniotic fluid has a sweet distinct smell - always best to get checked if you are worried. Hopefully it’s normal discharge. Take care.

This pad thing seems pointless...

Or anything is there is absorbing everything and I can’t gauge the “wetness” anymore.. or is that the point? If it’s not damp it’s not fluids?

I don't know how accurate they are or if recommended but you can buy pads that are supposed to detect amniotic fluid - they turn blue if it's detected. It may be worth checking with midwife first in case they aren't recommended and give false reassurance or unnecessary anxiety

Monitor this and go in yourself. Be prepared to be obstinate. I had leaking fluid and was not believed by hospital. Ask for a test. My fluid was leaking and my baby had no waters but because it was close to term there was no issues. I strongly believe it was a near miss situation that was then not even recorded although I had been at hospital twice with leaking water. Good Luck.

Don't take a chance. I was told my leaking waters was probably thrush and given thrush treatment. I went to hospital, then my GP, then back to hospital over the course of 3 or 4 days. Finally they did a swab that confirmed what I had said all along! I was pretty angry.

Trust your instinct.

I gave up on the pad a few hours ago as I couldn’t tell a damn thing!

Checked underwear just and still have oderless wet patches but like I said I have a leaky bladder anyway. Also I’m by no means soaked and it’s been a few hours.

I know it’s not a definitive sign of anything but baby’s movements have been “normal” all day!

I’m genuinely not fretting but I think I may be learning towards going in...

When I say oderless I mean there is normal “down there” smells but nothing distinctly of urine. If I am drinking lots of water, which I am, that would possibly mean it wouldn’t smell if it was urine...

Just to say we are at the hospital now. Had a lot more fluid today and spoke to a different MW who went "ohh that definitely doesn't sound like discharge does it! Come in, we can't really ignore this can we"

Just in the waiting area now. Hoping It's just a leaky bladder or something we can stop as 25+4 is terrifyingly early 🤞

@MrsRose2018, Hi I have been experiencing a watery discharge too which leaves wet patches on my underwear. I'm 21 weeks.

When I was in the hospital yesterday they did a speculum exam but she couldn't see anything out of the ordinary and took a swab to check for thrush. They said the fluid around the baby is fine.

I have no answer for you on what it is just want to wish you luck at the hospital and hopefully it's just discharge and not amniotic fluid.

I had a similar experience and I hadn't realised about watery discharge that starts around 25 to 30 weeks ..Hopefully that's all it is. I had a swab done that can tell of it's amniotic fluid

Had an initial consult with the MW. Showed her the underwear etc she said it’s not discharge so they are waiting for a room to free up so I can have a vaginal exam.

She did a Doppler and he’s got a perfectly normal strong heart beat which is good!

She said they will do further investigations but said it could be anything from urine to sweat to amnio.

I never thought I would be praying for urine as this will mean I’m basically incontinant because my underwear was soaked...

Waters have broken/amnio is leaking :(

I've been admitted for 72 hours and have had a massive needle injection of steroids in my ass (OMG ouch btw!!) and they've given me antibiotics.

They've said that if I don't go into labour or get an infection we can keep him inside for a bit! 34 weeks is the goal and I'll be induced then!

Physically I'm absolutely fine! In my hospital bed watching Harry Potter trying to keep my mind occupied!

Thank you for all your advice and help! Im SO SO glad I listened to you and my guy and didn't just accept this was discharge!

You're in the right place for sure. I'm sure you know this, but your amniotic fluid tops itself up so if you can avoid infection and so on there's a fair chance you'll be able to keep cooking baby for a while longer but even if baby comes tonight they have a fair chance of survival even if they will be tiny.

Omg hope your ok OP. Kinda worried as I have been leaking what i have been presuming watery discharge for a few days ... But i’ve been quite worried today as there has been more and i’ve noticed when i cough/sneeze it just pours out without sounding gross. After reading this i think i’m gonna go get checked 🤔 scared as only 19 weeks..

Just wanted to share a happy ending story as imagine you are worried...I've had preterm rupture of membranes 4 times I wont go into all the details as it I wasnt believed initially....but alls well that ends well.

First born at 36 weeks exactly ( waters ruptured 28 weeks)

2nd born 34 weeks ( leaking from 25 and confirmed ruptured at 27weeks)

3rd born 35 weeks ( leaking from 19 weeks confirmed 21 weeks)

4th born 34 weeks ... wasnt confirmed till 26weeks however MW agreed that I was correct from around 18 weeks ....

@Mummab123456 as I'm currently writing this from my hospital bed I say GO IN!!

I'm "lucky" as my baby is 25+4 and doesn't need his fluids to survive! Under 24 and you do!

Trust your gut and make them listen! Speak to a different MW if you feel fobbed off! If I had listened to the first MW and I don't know where we would have ended up!!

A woman knows what is discharge and what is not and I'm really annoyed with myself I let the MW tell me otherwise xx
