Hey so I swore by lactulose in the past as I had no issues with it relieving my symptoms but honestly I am struggling right now. I have gone 4 days without a bowel movment, I am drinking water regularly and also eating food that contain a lot of fibre AND have been taking lactulose twice a day and still I am not getting any urge to go? At the beginning it was so bad that it made me have haemrrhoids and bleeding with the bowel movement. The lactulose only worked once where it gave me diarrhoea but now it just doesn't seem to be working. All I have is a lot of wind. Is my baby in danger this way? I'm nearly 7 weeks pregnant. I started taking pregnacare which contains iron and usually iron tablets make me constipated. Is that along with the pregnancy just created some really tough bout of constipation? Any one else been in the same boat?

I’m in the same boat! Just over 8 weeks pregnant at the moment and been struggling going to the toilet! I too have been drinking loads of water, eating dates, dried apricots, have oats for breakfast and even going for a longish walk during the day, don’t seem to help too much! My husband got me Dulcosoft oral solution which is suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding so had a bit of that today and see if anything happens tomorrow!... ah things we have to go through being pregnant Grin

Hi, I'm 23 weeks but have been suffering with much harder bowel movements with bleeding for some time Confused
I had been making a huge effort to drink lots, eat the right foods, prune juice etc but didn't seem to help. I discovered it was the pregnacare tablets.

I think you're supposed to take them every day for first 12 weeks and I'd kept on but following my 14 week blood checks they said my iron and everything was fine so I just take one tablet a week now in case I'm lacking anything. Bowles are much happier Smile

I'm not an expert but I think the main thing you need is folate so perhaps you could just take a specific folate tablet and the pregnacare occasionally?

Thanks for your reply guys! @EL1984 I figured it might be the pregnacare making things extra difficult. I finally had a bowel movement when I got home from work! But considering I have been having lactulose daily, it was still a hard job! I think I'll take up on your advice and just take folic acid on its own.

Dulcolax stool softening tablets are brilliant

Diet wise; tinned pears and tinned baked beans are both easy and not disgusting :) I have one or the other every day

soak prunes in hot water for an hour, drink the liquid and eat the prunes. This was advice from a gyn/obs
