Private midwife?

Hi everyone,

I’m just wondering in anyone has used a private midwife before? I’m considering going down this route for various reasons - partly because of the current situation due to CV and the potential lack of options for women (I’m keen to try home birth) but also because it’s my first pregnancy, I have an underlying medical condition and previous MH issues like anxiety and I’m concerned about not being able to get the support I need in the current climate. Just want some other people’s opinions?

I’ve not used them.

But would one even be available?

@GreenTulips yes I’ve contacted a service and they are still operating

Go on imuk.org.uk. Each IM has their own website and sometimes has positive birth stories etc to help you make an informed decision.

I am 23 weeks and contacted PrivateMidwifes.com this week as I was also concerned about the lack of options and want a home birth. They were so helpful and reassuring, I had my booking appointment with them today and feel really relieved and pleased that we have gone with them. Its a big reassurance that I'll now have one point of contact and see the same midwife for all apts, birth and postnatal care. Also means all apts can be at home so no need to go to the GP or clinic. Really positive experience so far

Scary time to be having a baby, good luck

I had an independent midwife for my second pregnancy and birth. Best money we have ever spent. It wasn't cheap and used up savings but it was worth it to me.

I think there's plans to pull I. The private midwives into the NHS just as the private hospital nurses etc have been pulled in. I wouldn't expect them to be available.
The other reason nhs has suspended home births is because of the expectation that there won't be a reliable ambulance service should something go wrong. Ambulances numbers/drivers/pracritioners are going to be significantly impacted.

Perhaps try a doula if you are intent?

I work with Private Midwives. We are very busy, but always happy to talk through options with you. PM me if you want to.
The NHS can’t “pull us in” as we are independent and are actually already taking pressure off the NHS. I am doing lots of antenatal and postnatal care as that is being severely restricted at present in the NHS and also doing more home births than usual (after serious discussion of the potential delay of ambulance response)
