So I have had toxoplasmosis before i was pregnant so hoping i am ok. just making dinner tonight and found some kind of faeces in my bag of kale. i use it in my smoothies and soups. had 2 smoothies, with it so far, washed it hopefully thoroughly. only noticed the poo tonight when making dinner. 21 wks can feel the baby moving and all....do you think my baby will be ok? am i immune to it? really need reassurance

www.tommys.org says that although birds can carry toxoplasmosis you cannot catch it from their faeces, only cat poo. And it says that you cannot get toxoplasmosis more than once - you are immune for life.

Sympathy. I spent the last 3 months of my first pregnancy terrified I'd contracted toxoplasmosis (I hadn't) after MIL served up milk from bottles, which the birds had been pecking, without telling me - until after I'd drunk it. I didn't know then that you can't catch it from birds.

@Notverygrownup thank u, i hope i can't catch anything else from it. i wash the leaves one by one before putting it in my smoothie. will never buy leafy greens again until after the baby is born, between listeria and all the rest it's not worth the worry. lots of other green veg to eat.

thank u for reassurance i was too afraid to google

I’m not an expert but I do think the guideline is that toxoplasmosis is rare and it is mostly considered a risk if you contract it for the first time during pregnancy. The risk of having gotten it from your Kale is slim as usually cases are from direct contact with infected Dog or Cat faeces or infected meats.

Tommy’s has a great page on it (hope the clicky link works):

You’re ok if you’ve had toxoplasmosis before. I got it when newly pregnant for the first time which made for an incredibly stressful pregnancy but ultimately baby was absolutely fine. When I got pregnant again, they retested me to be on the safe side and as expected I just had the antibodies and everything was fine.
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy. I know how stressful this is, especially with everything else going on but I’m sure everything will be fine.

KatharinaRosalie · 24/03/2020 22:31

If you had it before you are immune and don't need to worry about it. Only new infections while pregnant are dangerous.

FeelingBeautiful · 24/03/2020 22:37

@Toadz thank u, it is very stressful. I hope everything is ok for me too, that is amazing that your baby was fine!

@KatharinaRosalie thank u too. I hope I didn't catch anything else, haven't felt I'll at all so fingers crossed.

@Toadz do you mind me asking, was there any way they could check during scans or blood tests that the baby was ok while you were pregnant?

I wasn’t in the UK so things are a little different. With my first pregnancy, I was tested routinely when they did the blood work at the beginning of the pregnancy. When it came back positive for toxoplasmosis we knew it was a recent infection (Long story!). I was under consultant care for the pregnancy, took antibiotics for the duration and had an amino at 18 weeks. Results were clear and baby was fine.
With my second pregnancy, they did do a blood test but as expected there was no recent infection and I just had the antibodies. No further action needed. I know how anxious you must feel but please try not to worry. You know you’ve had toxoplasmosis previously and it is only recent/current infections which are a danger to your baby.

FeelingBeautiful · 25/03/2020 10:52

@Toadz thank u for that, and I just spoke to my doc and she said if I am not feeling unwell just drink lots of water and come in on Monday for scan. So happy things went well for u

@FeelingBeautiful congratulations on your pregnancy!
Try not to worry(I know it’s hard!) I have been assured once you’ve had it once you have the anti bodies so you should be fine.
I live on a working farm so it was a worry for me.
