How long from first contraction to going into hospital?

I know it varies depending on the individual, but could anyone tell me roughly what to expect?

Most people won't need hospital op.

My contractions started on a Friday morning at about 8am, they were very light but noticeable and a definite tightening of my belly.

I didn’t go to hospital until the Saturday at about 11.30 at night. So I laboured at home for 2 days until my contractions were so painful that I felt I needed pain relief. I did phone the hospital a few times in that time for advice and they said to stay home as long as possible as I’d be more comfortable.

For what it’s worth I had a very low risk ‘text book’ pregnancy as they kept telling me.

It depends. I gave birth 7 hours from when the contractions started last time.

Oakmaiden · 24/03/2020 11:01

It varies wildly. Any answer people can give you probably won't be very helpful.

MrsXx4 · 24/03/2020 11:05

Oh forgot to mention that I finally ended up giving birth at 7pm on the Sunday night so I had over 50 hours of contractions.

student26 · 24/03/2020 11:07

If your waters break first (like mine both times) you need to go in straight away to be monitored for infections, etc. Otherwise when they are a few minutes apart or when you can’t take the pain anymore. Good luck!

I was about 20 hours at home with DC1 and 18 hours with DC2 before we went in. And then i was only 3/4 cm dilated both times

Thanks all.

First time baby. Woke up with back pain at 5, contractions every 5 minutes by 8, went to hospital at 10:30, fully dilated and pushing. Had him at 12:30. I was very lucky and it was a lovely experience.

GetTheSprinkles · 24/03/2020 11:17

Mine came and went over several days. They would start at night , worsen for several hours and then in the morning it would be like nothing had happened! On the 3rd night of this they ramped up and I was vomiting so went in to hospital, only to be told I was 2cm!! Baby arrived 3 days after this.

b0nnieN · 24/03/2020 11:56

With my first, my contraction started around 5am, and I went into hospital the next day at 8am (27hours later) . By that time I was 6cm dilated, and still didn't give birth until 11 hours later... it was a long day.

oldtownroad · 24/03/2020 12:08

My first 3 days. The second 2 hours (although was having BH for weeks).

kittykat7210 · 24/03/2020 12:22

I went in nearly straight away as from first contraction they were 2 minutes apart lasting 40 second to a minute! From first contraction to 10cm was less than 5 hours!

I was due on Sunday 30th august 2015. I was booked in for a sweep on the Wednesday, I started having mild contractions on the Tuesday so decided to leave the sweep and see if things progressed naturally. They didn't so I had a sweep at 3pm on the Friday. I went to the hospital at 9pm, was in the birth centre by 10.30. The head wasn't fully engaged so that's why things wouldn't progress. The midwife broke my waters artificially at 2am, and I gave birth at 6.58am on Saturday 5th September, after 4 days of contractions.

Darkstar4855 · 24/03/2020 13:30

Waters broke spontaneously at 2:30pm. Contractions started an hour later. Got to hospital at 9pm and was 5cm dilated.

Darkstar4855 · 24/03/2020 13:32

@student26 think it varies between hospitals. My waters broke spontaneously and my hospital were happy for me to stay at home for 24 hours as long as the fluid was clear and I was having movements.

Casino218 · 24/03/2020 14:00

Oh sorry read it as contracting virus not having a baby type contraction!

R2D2abc · 24/03/2020 14:10

I think the advice , in a non high risk pregnancy, to wait until you are contracting every 5 minutes.

Danetobe · 24/03/2020 14:12

A day or so.

daisypond · 24/03/2020 14:18

About four hours with all of mine.
