If we go on lockdown will I still be able to go to my 20 week scan

I’ve been told by my work today we’re being forced to take Furlough leave, and now listening to the news it sounds like we’re going to end up in a lockdown ASAP.

I’ve got my 20 week scan on Thursday, if we are on lockdown will this still go ahead? I desperately hope so, I’ve been so anxious due to some issues I’ve had and am really worried about not being able to go to my scan.

I can't imagine you wouldn't be able to. It will count as an essential medical reason. I know things are very uncertain and anxious right now, but I do believe there is no intention to stop pregnant women getting the antenatal care they need. Otherwise it opens up a whole set of other issues further down the line.

It might be that your trust has more conditions around the scan. I had mine on Friday and was told only one adult could accompany, and no children. I have heard that some other trusts are asking mothers to be to come alone. But the scans themselves are going ahead.

My Friday scan was actually quite calm. At reception we were asked to stand a certain distance and there was hand sanitizer we were asked to use. Seating in the reception area was well spaced so there was distance between people waiting.

I hope it all goes well.

I would think so because it’s classed as an essential appointment. My 20 week scan is in 2 weeks so I really hope we can still go. I’m guessing the NHS would contact us if not?

Pineappletree33 · 23/03/2020 17:19

Yes you will be able to. It’s a very important medical examination.

I'm in the same position, got my 20 week scan on Thurs too!
I'm expecting it to go ahead as it's an essential medical appointment but going to ring tomorrow just to confirm.

ChipsAreLife · 23/03/2020 17:28

Yes I would think so. If we don't all get scanned it will cause them more problems. When they suggested pregnant women may have to self isolate for 12 weeks they said you would still attend apps, but it could be that it's alone

ScouseMar · 23/03/2020 17:32

I expect so. In other countries in lockdown you are allowed out to get food and attend medical appointments or hospital.

Charchar19 · 23/03/2020 17:32

I have my 20 week scan friday and really hoping it still goes ahead - surely its essential? I had an automated phone call friday just gone confirming my appointment - fingers crossed!

kittykat7210 · 23/03/2020 18:36

I have a growth scan Wednesday, hoping to attend that too! Husband will have to drive me and we will have to take our daughter (2) as she can’t be at home alone!

anotherypasswordtoremember · 23/03/2020 18:38

Check out your NHS trusts antenatal website, they'll have posted something about this

NemophilistRebel · 23/03/2020 18:39

My scans are going ahead but my midwife appointments are all cancelled

Rachel227 · 23/03/2020 18:40

I'm worried about this too. I'm due my first scan next week (which I've been anxiously awaiting). I don't think I could bear to have it cancelled. I just want to know baby is ok!

Annabennett94 · 23/03/2020 23:22

@kittykat7210 Can you let me know how they are about taking your daughter please? I have my 20 week in a couple of weeks and am going to have to take my son, so want to know if they allow it

Mrselh · 23/03/2020 23:53

I've been told all scans & consultant appointments have to be attended alone. e.g. Cannot take children and husbands not even allowed in waiting room.

Blizzardwhizard · 23/03/2020 23:58

Yep. Partners not allowed in the hospital at all

kittykat7210 · 24/03/2020 00:19

@Annabennett94 will do, although we do have the option of them staying in the car where as you don’t, not sure how they can refuse you though!

Amanduh · 24/03/2020 07:49

They can refuse you. Most hospitals are not allowing children in at all unless they are patients. It’s a pandemic. All maternity appts here are strictly solo.

EL8888 · 24/03/2020 07:51

It’s healthcare / medical so it is essential

But no partners / children has been the case before this

Thumbellini · 24/03/2020 08:15

My DH wasn't allowed into mine on Friday so I suspect you may have to go alone. But antenatal appointments are essential healthcare so it won't be cancelled. Good luck!
