Bleeding 5 weeks pregnant

Hi everyone,
This is my first time pregnant at 34yo. I’m 5 weeks and 4 days. At the start of this week I noticed spotting when wiping after toilet but on Wednesday this week I had cramping like I would if I was having a period. I bled more that day, quite red and more than spotting. This eased off to a brownish colour and cramps went away next day. I spoke with Early pregnancy team who advised any bleeding isn’t normal but because it’s so early they wouldn’t be able to tell what’s caused it. They advised to do another pregnancy test in 7-10 days to see if I’m still pregnant and to get back in touch with results.
I suppose what I’m asking is if anyone else experienced these symptoms early pregnancy and if this resulted in a miscarriage? As you can imagine my anxiety is through the roof and I’m reading a lot of conflicting information online. Many thanks

Hello I didn't want to read and run. I'm not sure if my story is reassuring or not but I can let you know my experiences of bleeding in early pregnancy.
With my first pregnancy I had a small bright red bleed at 7 weeks, was scanned at EPU and all was fine. Baby was there, heart was beating. At 10 weeks I had a huge bleed with clots. By huge I mean my bathroom looked like a crime scene. Sorry if TMI...there was blood everywhere it was as if a tap was turned on inside me, I was gushing out bright red blood. Some clots were as big as my palm. I passed about 8 large clots and bled for 2 hours. At a&e we were told I had most likely miscarried. They sent me back to the EPU a week later to confirm I had passed everything. At that scan 5 days later were shocked to be shown a wriggly baby with a heartbeat! No reason was given for the bleed.
So bleeding doesn't always mean the worst. Obviously at 7 weeks they were able to scan me at EPU. I will say I didn't experience pain with the bleeding I had. Possibly some tiny cramps nothing to complain of.
I was told by the sonographer that some people bleed and have a healthy baby. Some people don't bleed at all and have a missed miscarriage. Its something they cant tell.
Unfortunately I lost my baby boy at 22 weeks. I began bleeding again at 16 weeks and was seen at maternity triage every other day. Baby always had healthy heartbeat. My 20 week scan showed I had little to no amniotic fluid. They believe I had been slowly leaking fluid along with blood for a few weeks and it went unnoticed. I was seen by specialists in London who confirmed my pregnancy was no longer viable even though my babies heart was beating. I delivered him still a week later.
Theories include an infection causing the waters to break or possibly the constant bleeding irritating the membranes and causing the rupture.
So despite my early bleeding not harming my baby and not miss carrying, i did not have a happy outcome.
I am 9 weeks pregnant now and bled yesterday. So I'm with you on the worry boat again! I'm trying to stay calm and remember what they told me before. I'm waiting to be scanned at EPU on monday. Feeling nervous.
Also please remember that cramping in early pregnancy can be normal too. Your body is stretching and growing to accommodate the baby. Hopefully EPU may scan you once you reach 6 or 7 weeks?

Thank you for sharing such an intimate journey. I’m sorry you had to experience that. Congratulations on your pregnancy, I’ll put all my good thoughts to the universe for us both.
I’m trying so hard to stay positive. Today my morning sickness has disappeared, again not sure if that’s a good or bad thing as I had been experiencing morning (or all day) sickness for about a week up until today. My bleeding wasn’t heavy or comparable to what I would bleed like when having my periods, no clots or any substance to note. It just looked like watery blood and only seen when going to toilet. I wasn’t soaked through underwear or clothing. I guess I just need to hold off and do the test next week. Early pregnancy team asked me to call them back with the results, I’ll make sure to ask if scan would be possible. If only pregnancy could be black and white in terms of what’s normal and what’s not. Everyone has such a different experience. Thank you again for replying. Take care

Unfortunately for us all it's not simple! Bleeding can mean the worst for some yet mean nothing to others. Cramping is normal to an extent but not a good sign sometimes. And symptoms come and go too. I found that once I was bleeding all my symptoms would disappear. As soon as I had a scan showing baby was ok they would all come back. I guess a lot of it is psychosomatic.
I have no idea about the pregnancy test suggestion. I suppose at that stage maybe the hormones would drop considerably. Please don't trust the tests with the number of weeks though. They are notoriously inaccurate! I have my fingers crossed for you. I would push for a scan if you can. Maybe speak to GP and see if they will refer you for one? Sending good vibes

Buzz22 · 13/03/2020 15:48

Also I expect you have heard of implantation bleeding. I would assume it's around the right time for that. A few weeks after missed period usually.

GemB86 · 13/03/2020 17:53

Yeah I assumed the pregnancy test suggestion was to see if hormones had reduced. I’ll definitely push for a scan regardless of result. Fingers and toes crossed that all is okay.

Hiya, sorry you're going through this. I have had bleeding at 5 1/2 weeks that was a miscarriage and I have had bleeding at 5 1/2 weeks that wasn't. The bleeding that was was heavy, dark red, and accompanied by strong cramps. This current pregnancy I have have had on and off spotting for three weeks, brown or pink - and all is well. Try not to get a scan too early as they can be misleading mine showed nothing til 7 weeks when we saw a baby and a heartbeat.

Good luck x

gemmaaaxxx · 14/03/2020 13:07

Thursday ... I went to early pregnancy unit due to spotting, cramps, the spotting became more red, back pains. I thought maybe it was okay, because spotting is normal as I was told. Anyway. Thursday came. I had my early scan. (9 week 3 days) to be told my baby doesn't look the right size for my last period, and the dates my first positive test was done. I'm being scanned on Thursday next week, to find out more information. I totally understand your feelings right now. I'm going through the exact same right now :( it's heart breaking, not knowing!:( I'm hoping and praying that it's good new. And hope yours is good news too! X

Prettylittlelady · 14/03/2020 15:28

I understand your worry.
I’ve had some experience of bleeding in pregnancy.
In my first pregnancy, which ended in a very early miscarriage I started bleeding slowly, first brown, then red and then it just got heavier from there. The miscarriage was confirmed with bloods and a scan. The bleeding was preceded by back and stomach cramps that were quite painful. And these carried on for a few days afterwards.

I’m currently 9+2 and I had some spotting at 6+6, I was given a scan and everything was fine (EPU) I’ve had another scan today - for reassures (private) and the baby is doing well & measuring a day ahead, although there is a site of a bleed that she could see which of course is worrying me.
I hope that you get the outcome that you are hoping for - I understand and empathise with you - it’s such a happy but worrying time.

GemB86 · 16/03/2020 17:30

Thank you all for your replies. I had a few days of nothing and now back to brownish looking blood/discharge. Still experiencing morning sickness and breast tenderness too. So I'm staying positive that I'm pregnant. Going to take a test this weekend and see where we go from there

Hi @GemB86

Just come across your thread, do you mind me asking what happened? I'm currently in the same boat 😔. Could do with hearing some re assuring stories x

GemB86 · 18/01/2021 22:59

Hi @lockdownbabyx

First of all I hope you are safe and well, I know how difficult it is being pregnant during lockdown!

So yeah, I experienced bleeding 5 weeks into pregnancy along with cramping. I took another test as directed by the early pregnant team 10 days later and was over the moon to know I was still pregnant! Fast forward to today I have a healthy 9 week (almost 10 week) old baby who is thriving.

Get in touch with your early pregnancy team and/or midwife to get as much advice as possible. I empathise with what you’re going through, it’s a happy but very anxious time. I hope and pray that it’s good news.

Good luck x

@GemB86 oh that's amazing, congratulations ☺️. Thank you so much for replying.

It's reassuring to hear but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. Currently still spotting brown and a little pink but nothing major. I have got a scan booked for the 3rd feb anyway as I have a history of a MC and a PUL. Just such a long time to wait 😩. I'm going to test in a few days and see what that says ☺️

SamT210 · 19/01/2021 17:23

What a fantastic outcome to read @GemB86. Nobody ever posts the good news on threads like this! @lockdownbabyx try not to fret too much (easier said than done I know) I experienced bleeding with a considerable amount of pain at 11 weeks. I was totally convinced the worst had happened, had a scan with EPU and all was fine with no explanation as to what it was. 16 weeks now and hasn't happened since. When I called my midwife when it first started she said she wasn't too worried if it was only brown/pink. I only got referred when it was red with pain. Hoping scan goes okay.

Firstimehere · 19/01/2021 23:04

Hi, I’m in the same situation, I’m 6 weeks into my pregnancy and I’m freaking out because I had spotting today! So anxious! I’ve booked a private scan next week because I need to know everything is ok. Hopefully this early bleeding is nothing, I hope everything goes well for you!

Buzz22 · 20/01/2021 09:40

Hi ladies. Just to follow on from earlier posts telling the story of losing my first baby boy and then bleeding in my 2nd pregnancy. I cant believe at the time of writing this I was waiting to be scanned at the early pregnancy unit due to bleeding again.
I delivered a healthy baby girl who has just turned 3 months old. It was a high risk pregnancy due to our previous stillbirth and then bleeding again. But we had a happy outcome this time.
I have my fingers crossed for all of you experiencing bleeding in early pregnancy. Please contact your GP they will always refer you for an early scan. At my hospital once you have been scanned one at EPU, they will happily see you again if you experience further bleeds.
And huge congratulations of the birth of your baby! @GemB86

GemB86 · 20/01/2021 15:19

@lockdownbabyx
I can only imagine how you must be feeling waiting for the scan. I pray your test shows positive.x

Thanks @Buzz22 and @GemB86 and congratulations, it really is so lovely to hear positive stories! I know it will be my turn one day.

I'm still spotting quite a bit, mainly brown but I've been taking daily tests and it's not looking good sadly as they're getting fainter. But now I can be referred and hopefully good things will come from that ☺️ xx
