What to put on newborn in crib?

I bought 2 sleeping bags in 0-6 thinking they were fine to use on newborns, but on the label it says not suitable for babies under 11lbs or newborns.

What do you put on top of the baby when they're sleeping? Suppose they already have a baby grow and sleep suit on.

A cellular blanket if needed. The most important thing is the temperature of the room. Then you can work out what is or isn’t needed.

Cellular blanket under arms and well tucked in?

mynameiscalypso · 09/03/2020 20:20

There are specific grobags which are suitable for newborns - I think they're called grosnugs maybe? We used one of those.

russiandwarf · 09/03/2020 20:52

I got a one suitable for newborns that was smaller and had full length sleeves - I think it was from jojomamanbebe. They might still have something similar as that was only 6 months ago. Otherwise have been using a cellular blanket as pp said. Tucked under her arms and under her rather than under the mattress so she couldn't wiggle under it. I also put her down near the bottom of the cot so if she did wiggle her feet would touch the bottom and she couldn't go under the blanket.

We used Grosnugs when baby was first born as he kept kicking the blankets off no matter how well we tucked them in. Grin

Swaddling sleeping sacks

firstimemamma · 09/03/2020 20:55

We used a blanket.

I also put her down near the bottom of the cot so if she did wiggle her feet would touch the bottom and she couldn't go under the blanket.

Also worth highlighting this. All babies should be placed feet to foot (of the cot) no matter what you use. It was repeatedly explained to us when I was pregnant everytime a professional mentioned safe sleeping but I know from others they were never explicitly told.

Grosnug are suitable from 5lbs 👍

Bol87 · 09/03/2020 21:09

We used something called SwaddleUps.. It was a kinda way of swaddling that left her arms up by her head as she liked (see photo)

There are various swaddle products on the market.. some babies love them & some don’t! Mind hated traditional swaddling but slept well in the SwaddleUp.

We went into sleeping bags about 8 weeks..

We used sleeping bags but the 0-6 month ones normally have under arm poppers to make it suitable for a smaller baby?

Also should say my DC are on the big side so not far off the min weight when born so never had an issue

idontwanttogoooooooooooo · 09/03/2020 22:07

@Bol87 ahhh that looks hideous. Maybe some babies love it, but I couldn't put my baby in that. I've just used a cellular blanket. I was given a grosnug, but haven't used it. I suppose it's to stop the startle reflex, I tend to keep baby on me until fully asleep. I just don't like the idea of restricting them.

Spark27 · 09/03/2020 22:42

We swaddled with a cellular blanket. Our DD loved being swaddled and it helped with the startling reflex. We called her a burrito baby!

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 10/03/2020 05:36

We're using a grosnug, but with the arm poppers open to leave his arms free as he seems to prefer it that way. It's brilliant as he kicks off blankets and wakes himself up. He was 7 lb 7 at birth and it fits him fine.

Megan2018 · 10/03/2020 05:39

Grosnug here too

kayleesmithy · 10/03/2020 11:34

OK going to order the grosnug, but can I use the open arms way from birth? I dont particularly want to swaddle

PrayingandHoping · 10/03/2020 11:44

Yes u can

kayleesmithy · 10/03/2020 11:59

To those who are using/have used the grow snug is the neck tight or ok? Some reviews are saying its quite tight x

PrayingandHoping · 10/03/2020 13:55

Not on my baby. Only just stopped using it now at 4 months old and never got tight round the neck

Prob depends on the build of your baby

mynameiscalypso · 10/03/2020 14:18

DS has a giant head and it was fine for him from birth for the first couple of months.

Megan2018 · 10/03/2020 20:02

Not tight on the head for us, we have a 50th centile head

ChainsawBear · 10/03/2020 20:04

I used a swaddle wrap, swaddle bags or simple blankets in the first few months.
