Early scan - no heartbeat at 6 weeks

Just back from scan. They could see sac (11mm) and yolk but no heartbeat. From measurements saying 6 weeks but my dates put me at 6+6.

Preparing for the worst but wanted to know if anyone else has had this sort of information. We detected heartbeat at 6+2 with my eldest so this doesn't feel good. Sad

Hi OP

I am so sorry to hear of your situation!

We went into our EPU as my private HCGs hadn’t doubled at 6 weeks and there was a heartbeat present.. HOWEVER it’s entirely dependent on your dates!

Clear Blue tests/ovulation trackers can even be unreliable! My doctor put my ovulation/conception date as the week where I was away with work in a different part of the country!!

I would recommend getting your bloods done and go back in a week (as torturous as that will be for you!) xxx

Thanks for the reply @MrsRose2018

How/where can I get my bloods checked? I am not due to see GP until next Monday, is it something they can do?

So I would say your EPU but from what I’ve read by other women on this forum they seem pretty hit and miss (I’m reluctant to say shit because it’s the NHS and they’re stretched etc).

I’m in Manchester and St Mary’s hospital have an emergency gyne unit and will see, test and scan any pregnant woman with miscarriage symptoms or other concerns.

Outside of that we used Pall Mall Medical www.pallmallmedical.co.uk/tests-scans-and-diagnostics/blood-tests

Beta HCG £53 per test!

They only cover the north west I think though, but If you google “private HCG test in X” somewhere will come up xx

Also, my GP did do a blood test to test my HCGs but that was after a miscarriage last year just to make sure my levels were going DOWN as I was still getting positive pregnancy tests a month after surgical management xx

My current pregnancy, my first scan showed only a gestational sac, i thought i was 6 weeks, they put me at 4. I was so sure it was all over as we had several losses already at that point. Went back a week later and there was a little hb they put me between 5 and 6, 2 weeks after that i had a little baby bean bang on 8 weeks. Now i am 29 weeks.

Also had my hcg tested as had a large bleed at the beginning of pregnancy, my hcg sometimes doubled but sometimes didn't.

cookielove · 09/03/2020 12:36

My point being it may be ok

MummyMilla · 09/03/2020 13:02

@MrsRose2018 thanks for that info. I think I am going to wait until GP on Monday and ask if they can refer me for another scan after that. My mum has just reminded me that my periods have been fairly random for the last year (which is why I didn't think I'd even get pg tbh), so it will be hard to know exact dates.

@cookielove - thanks for sharing your story. As per above, there's a chance I've got dates wrong. I check my stats for DS1 and they dated him as 6+2 and measuring 20mm. This one is saying 6 weeks and 11mm. Someone said they can double in a day, so maybe it's not that bad afterall (although cannot find a ref for this)? I don't know, sadly I just need to wait another week or so and see what happens Confused.

Go to your local EPU they can do blood tests 48 hours apart to see how your hormones are progressing, sometimes it may just be too early for little one to see the heart beat xxx
