How does matb1 form work? 1st baby

This is my first pregnancy so I’m not sure!

Do I get it from my midwife or GP automatically or do I need to ask for it? and does it need to be handed in to my work by a certain time? I think I read it needs to be handed in 15 weeks before my due date but at my last midwife appointment they said they wouldn’t see me until I was 26 weeks so I’m a bit confused!

Thanks in advance everyone xx

Hi OP. Yes the timings are a bit off. I had to give in by 15 weeks left too but the midwife said she doesn't give it until 25 weeks. I just sent it off asap and all was fine with my work. It's just a small form confirming your pregnancy at the end of the day. However my midwife did say if I really needed it she could do it from 20 week scan onwards. You do have to ask them for it though.

You get it after 20 weeks. Your employer doesnt need it at 25 weeks although you need to inform them of your pregnancy by then.

Within 21 days of yourSMPstart date (or as soon as possible if the baby’s born early) give your employer either:

  • a letter from your doctor or midwife
  • your MATB1 certificate - doctors and midwives will give you this no more than 20 weeks before the due date

www.gov.uk/maternity-pay-leave/how-to-claim

For Maternity Leave - advise of pregnancy and when you want leave to start by 25 weeks

For Maternity Pay - hand in MatB1 within 28 days of SMP date (or as soon as you get it after 20 weeks)
