Hi everyone, can anyone enlighten me to what happens at your 16 week appointment with the midwife? Do I get to hear the baby? Or is it just bloods etc?

Urine sample, blood pressure, chat and chance to ask questions. They don't routinely listen to heart at 16 weeks now as it can be hard to find causing anxiety. However midwife tried anyway for me yesterday at my 16 week appointment so I heard it.

It depends on your area. Where I'm from, they go through your blood results from booking in appt and screening test results, check your blood pressure and generally just have a chat/answer any questions.
The midwife did listen to baby's heartbeat at my appointment but I don't think that's the norm judging by other threads I've seen on MN

Depends on area mine won't do heartbeat before 24 weeks but others still do

Bellsx · 07/03/2020 14:29

It does say in your blue notes what they do but like others have said they go through your blood test results with you, do blood pressure, check urine and go through a few other things then mine says listen to the heartbeat but again that may be different depending on where you are /what their policy is.

Probably the most boring appointment of them. Urine test, blood pressure, very quick chat unless you have any concerns.. in both pregnancies was no longer than 10 mins. My area don’t listen to the heartbeat in any appointment throughout pregnancy. Again, both pregnancies & I’ve never had it listened into at a midwife appointment 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m not a very anxious person so thankfully, it’s never bothered me!

My appointment took almost half an hour, but midwife didn't do anything other than what people have said above. She explained that they wouldn't check the heartbeat unless I really wanted them too, mostly we just chatted.

secretllama · 07/03/2020 16:32

Its standard in my region to check heartbeat at every appt from 16weeks onwards. I'm in Scotland x

Charchar19 · 07/03/2020 16:35

I had mine yesterday and had my normal midwife and a student midwife like others had said more of a chat, mentioned whooping cough injection, listened to heartbeat (not sure if this was routine or because she was training) lasted 30 mins max. Now the wait to 20 week scan 😬

santoslhalperrr · 07/03/2020 16:40

Blood test, urine sample, discussion of general health etc.

bwSB · 07/03/2020 17:19

I’m in Scotland so hopefully we get to hear the heartbeat! Thanks for your replies everyone, I had a rough idea but was just curious what everyone else’s experiences had been

16 wks heartbeat might be hard to hear on the doppler OP, just keep that in mind and try not to stress if they can't pick it up. He or she will have a lot of room in there at the moment.

I had my scan last week and I got to listen to the heart beat for about 5 seconds before the little bugger kicked the Doppler and moved 😂 they also gave me my blood results, took my blood pressure and had a chat about any concerns I had x
