Spina Bifida Risk... please help!

Hiya,

I had a blood test to test for Down's syndrome, and the risk for that came back low risk.

However, a hormone called AFP came back high at 3.96 (average normal is 2.5). AFP is to do with Spina Bifida (neural tube defects). The midwife said there is a chance my baby could have a neural tube defect as my levels are high...

I'm so worried and scared what this means for me and my baby!

Anybody else experienced high levels and everything's been fine? Or any mummies with children who have spina bifida?

TIA 💕

What test did you have done? Can they do some further tests tk clarify? Hope all goes well for you. How many weeks are you? x

@DJBebe I had a QUAD blood test done and I'm 15 weeks + 2 today! I'm having a scan today to see whether they can see the spine and if there is a gap. Xx

I haven't heard of QUAD test but i hope the scan goes well and the baby is healthy! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I had the same with my second child. Be prepared OP to have a brief counselling session prior to the scan, where they discuss possibilities available depending on the outcome.

My scan showed no abnormalities, but we had to have scans every few weeks to monitor growth etc.

I went in to have a very healthy now 17 year old girl. I would say the pregnancy wasn't as relaxed as my first and having regular scans showed other issues I wouldn't if ever been aware of (fluid round the heart once, gone by next scan)

Good luck
