Is it possible to have a missed triplet then to miscarry it?

We had an early scan at 8 weeks because we were unsure of dates as I had the coil fitted but it fell out. At that scan we were told it was twins :-)

On Sunday I had a small bleed and some pains/cramps. Took myself off for a scan and 2 heartbeats and little bubbas's were seen.

Today I woke to some quite severe pains and bleeding with a clot that looked similar to what I had before when I miscarried many years ago.

I had midwife today anyway so waited to see her and took the said clot with me that didn't break when squished (sorry TMI)

She has suggested that I may have been pregnant with triplets but that one didn't take and my body has now got rid of it.

Has anyone heard of this happening?

Thank you all in advance.
