Hey, I’ve just found out I’m 11 weeks pregnant but I’m so worried because I have been drinking and taking cocaine before I knew, all during the Christmas period I drank so much and I’m so worried I have caused damage to the baby! I have my scan next week but I’m not sure how much that one tells you? I just feel terrible and the baby’s father has left me and isn’t supporting me so I just feel abit lost and I feel absolutely terrible for drinking and taking drugs but I had absolutely no idea x

Obviously there's no guarantee in pregnancy but I think having put your body/baby through it already and not miscarried it is probably a good sign that all is normal in there.

Are you drink and drug dependant OP?

Honeyyy44 · 02/03/2020 16:40

@easythere no I don’t depend on them, I have stopped drinking and stuff now. I only did it at weekends with friends. So silly I know 😞 @Delbelleber okay thank you for that bit of reassurance

From the scans I had the placenta doesn't take over until somewhere around 12 weeks so until then nothing from your bloodstream can get in there. Plenty of people don't know they're pregnant until a little later in pregnancy so chances are that everything will be just fine.

Either way you need to discuss this with your midwife ASAP.

She'll be able to offer support and advice in the right places and be able to refer you for help if needed.
If you are intent on keeping baby and are a 'social' cocaine taker I really strongly recommend any help offered as that's certainly something no child deserves to be around.

I hope all goes well Thanks

You've given up now, you're only eleven weeks so I think you willl be fine.

Congratulations - if you are happy to be pregnant that is.

Thank you everyone, it’s not something I go out looking for but if I have had some alcohol I have ended up having some cocaine, I’m completely not proud of it but it’s been very easy to cut out my life soon as I found out.
I am happy I’m pregnant, I’m really scared and I’m going into the unknown, I’m really gutted I’m now doing this alone as my partner has left but I have my family supporting me and they’re really great! I still just feel careless and stupid for taking drugs in the early stages, I just wish I knew I was pregnant as I wouldn’t of done anything like that! I have my 12 week scan next week but I’m not sure how much they can tell you at that? X

@Honeyyy44 your 12 week scan can't tell you a whole lot. They do the CUBs screening if you opt for it and can date your pregnancy.

If you're 11 weeks pregnant you would have conceived around 9 weeks ago (if you have an average cycle) so early January. So over the Xmas period you wouldn't have been pregnant or in the extremely early stages. Have you done it much since? Babies are pretty resilient, hopefully there will have been no harm done x

Hey OP , easier said than done but try not to worry. I was told by my midwife when I was worrying over some medication I took accidentally at 7 weeks, that the baby doesn’t get anything from your blood stream until after 12 weeks as it is still living off it’s little sac rather than the placenta .
She also said ‘people have taken much worse than you have and they do it intentionally when they know they’re pregnant , so don’t you worry’ . I accidentally took what I thought was my anti sickness med but it was actually one of my emergency seizure medications that are strictly no no for pregnant women. I’m now 14 weeks and a few days , and baby is perfect . So don’t worry. My friend also drank and smoked all through her pregnancy as she didn’t know she was pregnant .

@MrFlibblesEyes I’m so confused by your message lol?

Thank you everyone for making me feel a little better been beating myself up about this and worrying like mad! Really need to try stop stressing as much because it’s not going to be good for the baby x

Sorry for confusing you lol. Pregnancy is measured from the first day of your last period for ease for medical professionals as people ovulate at different times and have different length cycles. You don't actually physically conceive the child until you have ovulated which for the standard 28 day cycle is day 14ish (although this can vary quite a bit) so although you are counted as 11 weeks pregnant the baby will have only been conceived around 9 weeks ago. It then takes a further week or so to implant so no amount of drinking /drugs at Christmas would have affected the baby as it wouldn't have existed or been physically joined to you at that point!
