I'm getting nervous, I'm so scared they'll find something wrong. How different is it to the 12 week scan? We are hoping to find out the sex too.

Usually takes longer! They really have a good detailed look at all the different body parts to make sure everything's ok. Good luck.

Hi,
Mine was different in the fact the overall time at hospital was much quicker as we didn’t have to have the blood tests done (triple check)
But the scan wad very detailed, obviously a lot clearer. They do measurements such as abdominal size, head, femur length etc... check placenta position

They may/may not offer to tell you girl/boy!

Hope you enjoy it :)

They may offer you an internal scan to check the length of your cervix. I wasn't aware of this until a friend mentioned it but glad she did so was prepared. All fine though no issues.

It was great to see baby again. Good luck!

It's longer, we were unable to get a good look at DS's heart so we had to come back for a rescan. Even if babies size doesn't match up with gestation your due date won't change. Baby will be much more baby shaped.

It'll take longer, as pp have said. Mine was extra long because I realised after about 10 minutes that the screen had someone else's name at the top, not mine! So she had to go and do the measurements again. Then I felt ill so that delayed it slightly (lying down on back too long).

Thanks everyone.
Has anyone had the sonographer refuse to tell babies sex?

Oh so much to see on the 20wk. It's the big one. They'll check for any health issues, check formation of limbs, check for cleft palate issues (meaning you'll see your beautiful baby's lips).

Sometimes the baby won't cooperate like mine and lie in an odd position, so they couldn't see a few things, so if that's the case they'll get you to go for a walk and have some sugar, in the hope that gets baby wriggling. Mine still didn't want to help so we had to go back a week later.

Enjoy! It's a very detailed scan and I'm sure it will be fine, perfectly normal to be nervous but chances are you won't need to be!

No issues in finding out the sex of the baby either. We already knew from an NIPT test. But the sonographer was happy to confirm for us.

Most hospitals will tell you the sex. There are a few specific areas in the country where there are large populations of those with religious beliefs of boys being more valued than girls. As such, hospitals in those areas have a blanket rule of not telling the sex at scans. But from my knowledge, it’s a very limited number of hospitals! Chances are you’ll be able to find out if baby is playing play & doesn’t have its legs crossed Grin

Not much difference.. Just takes longer and the baby is bigger so more to see I guess!

With my 2nd the woman wasn't very nice and done the scan and started to wipe my tummy down when I said, oh are you not telling me the sex of the baby?? When she huffed and said, oh fgs and then checked and told me the sex. Wasn't the best experience.

Tbh I'm almost 38 weeks pregnant with my 3rd and with all 3 I've had lovely sonographers and some snappy, moody ones.
Enjoy your scan x

Intrigued by people saying it takes longer - how long does it take? As when I phoned to try and move my appointment (hospital re-scheduled it to a slightly inconvenient time) the lady says it only takes 30 minutes?

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 02/03/2020 18:18

I loved my 20 week scan!! It is so much more detailed than the 12 week, they show you through everything like babys heart, stomach, bladder, spine, etc then the leg bones and arm bones etc it is really fun to see it all!

ShirleyPhallus · 02/03/2020 18:21

20 week scan is the magical one, you find out that your baby is happy and healthy and get a much clearer image than 12 weeks

I’d tell them in advance you want to know the sex. If it’s a boy, it’s totally obvious though!

RhymingRabbit3 · 02/03/2020 18:21

If I remember correctly the 12 week scan was only about 10-15 minutes. They measured the length, heartbeat and nuchal fold thats about it.

The 20 week scan was more like 30 minutes. They look at all the different organs - heart, stomach, brain, leg and arm bones. They also looked for cleft palate, spina bifida etc. It was much more detailed and longer. Also checked position of placenta and blood flow through umbilical cord.
