No yolk sac at 5 weeks. Has anyone experienced this?

Hi everyone. I’m not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I’m looking for some input. I had an emergency ultrasound and bloodwork done today (Friday the 29th) at exactly 5 weeks due to some light bleeding. My hcg was at 3,300 (up from 584 Wednesday) but the ER doctor told me he believes i am miscarrying due to the fact that he cannot see a yolk sac. He says everything would look “normal” for a 5 week scan if my hormones were not so high. He told me at 1,500-2000 hcg there should be a visible yolk sac. I am devastated and wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. Thank you all xx

I meant to say Saturday the 29th rather than Friday.

Hi, I was scanned at 5 and a half weeks because of bleeding. Doctor saw gestational sac but no yolk sac. I had to wait a week (longest week of my life) to be scanned again, though doctor said his ‘hunch’ was that the pregnancy was not going to develop. Scan 8 days later showed yolk sac and embryo with a steady heartbeat. Bleeding had been due to a haematoma in the womb caused by uterine expansion.

So much for that hunch!

Just to add: I am not sure about my HCG levels at the time of the first scan, as was not given a number, but doctor said they were ‘very high’ and a Clearblue pregnancy test the next day had me at ‘3+ weeks’, so it follows that yes, you can have high HCG levels and no yolk sac at one point without it meaning everything is over.

I wonder why these predictions seem to be given by male doctors?... They can be so blasé about expressing their personal hunches and I’m sure it’s because they have no idea what that does to a pregnant woman’s sanity. All the female staff on the ward were much more tactful and reassuring.

&dobbyrockz try to keep calm, stressing won't help anyone (easier said then done, I know).
I went through a similar thing. I had a gestation sac and no yolk sac. I thought I was around 7 weeks. The scan suggested 5.
I had blood tests and was told my HCG levels should double for a viable pregnancy.
They didn't. They went from 4100 on Monday to 4300 on Wednesday. I did miscarry. The fact your HCG levels have changed dramatically, it's a good sign.
So many people have had the same thing and gone on to have a successful pregnancy. It may have just been too early.
I wish you all the best and hope you get some good news soon.

Thank you both for your encouraging responses! I am trying to keep calm and wait until Monday. Sad
