Fetal medicine appointment

Hi guys,
I had my 20 week scan the other day, my baby is fine but she found something near my placenta and baby's head, she said it isn't attached to anything so she isn't sure what it is, so she has referred me to the Fetal medicine for a scan to see what it is.

I'm so worried as I think what if it's cancer, and I have to wait 6 days for my appointment. I'm so worried I can't eat :(.
Anyone else had this please?

Thank you x

It won't be cancer - a) because that would be incredibly unlikely in this place and at your age, and b) because cancer would be attached to something! It might be a sac from another embryo which didn't develop, or possibly a fibroid & she just couldn't see where it attached. But if your baby looked healthy then you can relax :-)

Thank you so much for your reply :). That's made me feel a little better. I'm sure it will be ok. Thank you again xx

Which fetal medicine have you been referred to? I was under LGI for fetal anemia and they were amazing.

The specialist midwives all had counselling qualifications too.

danim81 · 29/02/2020 09:16

@Marmite27 I am going to the one in Birmingham, heartlands. Xx

I’m sure they’ll be just as lovely.

danim81 · 29/02/2020 14:39

@Marmite27 I'm just worried because the Sonographer lady didn't have a clue. So I'm just wondering what it could be :(. Thank you tho xx

@Marmite27 what specialist did you have at LGI ? I'm under them now too due to something wrong with baby x

Op I won't say don't worry because I've been in your situation and it's the last thing you want to hear of course your going to worry and 6 days will feel like a lifetime but just take them one day at a time and you will definitely get some answers from the specialist so focus on that at least then you will know what your dealing with and I hope it's nothing serious x

I was under Colette Sparey, but saw whoever was on call several times. They do a rotation so they’re on labour ward every few weeks so miss a clinic or two. I saw Andrew Breeze, Gemma and Tracey, but I can’t remember their surnames.

It was Tracey that face DC2 her marching orders at 35 weeks.

Marmite27 · 29/02/2020 19:22

gave not face Blush

mrssunshinexxx · 01/03/2020 12:22

@Marmite27 does Dr Sparey have short hair / quite serious ? That's who I'm under x

Marmite27 · 01/03/2020 23:32

She did 2 years ago. She was very thorough.

mrssunshinexxx · 02/03/2020 06:57

@Marmite27 yeah she's thorough but she made me feel v awkward for crying !

I hadn't heard of it, but have just read up on it. I'm a health researcher with an interest in maternity issues. Has the doctor confirmed that the mass in your pregnancy is a twin that didn't develop properly? Or is it still one possibility?

From a quick read of the literature on this, if your baby is looking good at 20 weeks then that's a good start. It looks like the recommendation is regular scans to check that the baby's heart is not being overworked by having to pump for the mass as well. Does that fit with what you've been told? Is there anything you'd especially like to find out?

danim81 · 07/03/2020 07:07

@MirenaManiac yes I have that.
They didn't find out I was having twins until I was 20 weeks, and the pump twin is doing really well.
I have another scan on Monday to go through my options.

Thank you so much, not many people know what it is as it's so rare x

Good luck OP I don't know anything about this area but sending you a handhold, Flowers hope all turns out well for you.

mrssunshinexxx · 07/03/2020 08:18

@danim81 morning hope you are ok are you at LGI?
What is happening with your baby if you are happy to talk about it ?
My sonographer at 20 week scan picked up an issue she thought it was a blocked kidney so we got referred to LGI the specialist there wasn't sure whether it's a blocked kidney or an ovarian cyst so we go back at 30 weeks where she said she was confident she would be able to tell which it is it's all very worrying x

danim81 · 07/03/2020 08:21

@OldGrinch thank you :) x

@mrssunshinexxx yes I'm having a TRAP pregnancy, it's very rare. If you google it you will get some information on it.
It's a very worrying time for us all.
Awww I really hope you and baby are ok, I'm sure everything will be fine. Keep me updated and i will with you guys xx

@danim81 when I read your first post I mentioned undeveloped twins, but didn't know that they could potentially cause problems for the baby like this. When I read up on TRAP pregnancies it sounded very worrying, and of course the cases you read about online tend to be the more severe ones - but it sounds from what you've said like your baby is on a good situation. As the undeveloped twin wasn't spotted until 20 weeks, presumably it was small if not picked up on the 12 week scan? It looks like the highest risk period for TRAP pregnancies is before 20 weeks, and if the undeveloped twin is large, so both good news for you and your baby. Let us know how the next scan goes please!

mrssunshinexxx · 02/04/2020 08:29

Hi ladies hope you and babies are well. Is anyone under LEeds general infirmary? If so are partners allowed to go for Fetal medicine apps? I feel as though they are very different to standard scans .. x
