Help! I made pancakes this evening and thought they tasted a little off (but stale, not very sweet) and have now discovered I used flour that went off YEARS ago. What was I thinking!! I know I’m probably being ridiculous but I’m now so panicked that I could have harmed the baby (im 14 weeks) Has anyone done anything similar or have any words of reassurance?

I made myself sick as soon as I realised what I’d done and so pretty sure I’ve got all the offending pancakes out of my system but I keep worrying some bacteria could have been digested.

I’m aware I’m being slightly hysterical!

Midwives words to be today “Nature has a beautiful way of protecting our babies” - don’t worry!

It's flour. It's a very long-life product that doesn't go off on any meaningful way. Everyone has bags of flour that have been hanging around forever. I can't imagine it was anything other than a 'best before' date (i.e. a recommendation that it may not be quite as nice after that date) anyway, so assuming it wasn't actively full of mould or weevils or something, I can't see any possible way it could have done any harm.

I am, however, concerned about your making yourself vomit. I don't imagine you've done yourself or baby any harm by doing it, but it's a massive overreaction and just not generally a brilliant plan, and better avoided moving forward.

dementedpixie · 25/02/2020 20:58

Why on earth did you make yourself vomit? Flour has a best before date not a use by so quality may deteriorate but it wont be dangerous to eat.

PixieDustt · 25/02/2020 21:34

It should be okay.
I am pretty sure I had taken a few OOD pregnacare tablets I got free from the baby unit. Wasn't until recently I saw they had an OOD in June 2019 I had DS in July 2019. I stupidly didn't look! Ok

PixieDustt · 25/02/2020 21:35

Don't know why ok ended up on the end!

dennisdonut · 25/02/2020 21:37

Flour lasts indefinitely. It’s only a bbe date. Why on earth did you make yourself vomit Confused

YouBoggleMyMind · 25/02/2020 21:50

You will be fine. You didn't need to vomit though. That's extreme and not necessarily.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 25/02/2020 21:53

The weevils are valuable extra protein for the baby.

(JOKE! You’d have spotted them, but they’re not dangerous anyway)

DesLynamsMoustache · 25/02/2020 21:55

I think making yourself sick was worse for you than some out of date flour!

Persipan · 25/02/2020 21:58

(Haha I did actually intend to make a weevil/protein addendum when I posted; I just hit submit too early!)

rottiemum88 · 25/02/2020 21:59

Honestly, making yourself sick was ridiculous. If you're anxious to the extent that doing that seemed like a good idea you might want to talk to your midwife about getting some help for it

FeelingBeautiful · 25/02/2020 22:31

You're not ridiculous honey, you did what you thought was right. I asked my OB today about eating something gone off and she said it was completely fine. So now you know : )
I've had a rough few days, feeling a bit down about all the dangers but we are doing our best. Make sure you get some new flour tomorrow and really enjoy your pancakes!
