Are false negatives common?

Just wondering if there are any other ladies out there who have experienced false negatives and then turned out to be pregnant. My period is 6 days late and I've never missed a period before! I took a pregnancy test after 3 days and 5 days and both were negative (brand was boots). I've resigned myself to the fact I'm probably not pregnant, which isn't really a bad thing because I wasn't intending on getting pregnant at the moment. But I can't say I'm not a bit disappointed! It's just a bit odd because this month I had some cramps about 7 days after ovulation, and a lot of nausea/loss of appetite, so much so that I told my partner I thought I might be pregnant before I'd even missed my period. So it's a little coincidental that I am actually so late! But at the moment I don't have any pregnancy symptoms. I don't know what else would be causing the lack of period though.

Has anyone experienced this before?

It's common but usually from testing too early or you ovulated late.
